If you score a 5 on AP Chem, you can take Chem 208 without taking 207, correct?

If so, it appears, that Chem 208 is only offered in the spring semester. So if I take the credits, would I guess I would not take chem first semester?

Tell me if I am wrong about the credits...

You are correct on both fronts.

If you are planning on majoring in either Chemical engineering or materials science, you may want to look at the Honors Chem 2150-2160 sequence.

i am doing life sciences. I am actually happy about this because it clears up some room first semester.

keep in mind that med schools want to see 1 year of gen chem or advanced coursework in place of that. So you may have to sub that 1 semester of skipped gen chem with something more difficult (like physical chemistry)

^Thanks for the advice. I assume I would take advanced chemistry (perhaps physical chemistry) after frosh year, correct?

Also, I posted another thread about this. But, can you let me know if Calculus for Social and Life Sciences meets the premed requirements?

I would HIGHLY suggest against using P-chem for your med school requirement. If you want to go to med school but have AP Chem credit, DO the 2150-2160 sequence.

P-chem won’t help you at ALL for med school.

Will I be fine for med school if i take 208 spring 2011 and then soph year take organic chem?

And can u answer about the calc question?

yes calc for life and social sciences meets the premed requirment. unfortunately (one incoming freshman premed to another) you wouldnt be fine taking one semester of gen chem + 2 semesters of orgo. I’d advise against taking physical chemistry. I’m in a similar situation as I got a 5 on AP chem two years back but i dont think i’ll skip it. I’ll just take the 2070-2080 sequence

If you get a 5 on the test, do you need to take an additional placement test for 215-216?

hmmmm decisions decisions

It’s unclear to me why you want to forgo gen chem in favor of p-chem and then ask if you can do the simplest, most basic calculus available.

I was unaware that is was the simplest, most basic calculus available. And I am still undecided what I am doing with chemistry. Just assessing my options.

However, I was not the strongest calculus student in high school. Will it look bad to upper tier med schools if I take calc for life sciences if the rest of my course load is rigorous?

For heavens sake, if you don’t like calculus, why are you planning on taking p-chem?

Take 207-208 and be done with it.

k, thanks for the advice. I might take honors because I am very serious about chemistry but most likely i will take 207-08.

Norcalguy, will calc for life sciences look bad for med school?

It’s fine. But a few med schools require 1 full year of calc.

sorry for all the questions, but is there anything else i can take instead of physical chem for advanced coursework?

and if anyone took honors chem, can they PM me?

Any inorganic/analytical chemistry course will suffice. But, don’t expect them to be easy.
