Chem 3 UGSI

So I'm currently in chem 3a (and lab) and am doing pretty well, probably going to end up with some sort of an A, I honestly have no idea how Baranger is planning on making her curve work out, but I've got at least an A. So I read an old thread where they said that in order to be a ugsi, you have to get "A's" in 3a,3b, then TA for one semester, and then you can apply to be a ugsi. I'm kind of interested in doing this (eventually), and was just hoping someone could give me an idea of what this involves. Personally, I know my chemistry (mostly), but would be kind of scared of not knowing all the knowledge that one would need, since this is technically a graduate "job". Also, how much do you get paid? Someone today told me that it basically waived your tuition - is this true?

On another side, this would look good on a med school application, right? I was planning on getting, like, an actual job, but I would really prefer teaching. Oh, and how many units can you fit in with this (i.e. how much of your time does this take? Could you fit this + research [the same person told me that his research takes 30+ hours per week] + 15-17 units + maybe volunteering/random med stuff for like 3-4 hours?).
