Chem 3A Materials

So I'm looking at the list of required and recommended materials for Chem 3A, and I'm a little confused which ones are actually necessary and helpful.

The list includes:
- Organic Chemistry (W/ Sol.Man/Acs Model Kit/Chempo)
- Hgs Molecular Structure Model (Set Only-Manual & K)
- Organic Chemistry, Vollhardt (is this the same as the first 1?)
- Organic Chemistry S.G. & Sol Man, Schore
- Chemportal Access, Vollhardt

I'm considering buying some of these online (since they're cheaper than ned's), but was wondering if some of these can only be bought at the store.. (model kit? - can we buy this separately?)

The first item on you rlist has the book (item 3), the access card (item 5) and the model (item 2) included, as well as the solutions manual part of item 4. Ned’s will often display a confusing list that includes bundles, their individual components and lots of ‘recommended’ items that are actually anything that dimly relates to the class.

i’ve used everything except chemportal access

ohk thanks rider, so this means I can buy the model kit, sol. manual, and chemportal access all individually?

Also, how useful was the book for the class? I was thinking of reading ahead so I’m not totally lost when class starts (I’m horrible in chem). Any suggestions where I should start? (is the reading in sequential order, from ch.1?)
Thanks guys!

Are the model kit and chemportal access absolutely necessary for the class?

The chemportal is just an online version of the book and for Frechet it was useless (“I don’t even know what this chemportal is”-in his awesome french accent haha), but I’m not sure if it’s necessary for Pederson and you can always borrow the kit from a friend, which is what a lot of people I know did. It’s handy, but not worth the money IMO.

If you’re taking 3A in fall, then you’re probably take it with Pedersen who uses a reader instead of the book. I never took it with Pedersen so I don’t know if reading the book is of any assistance when it comes to learning the material.

hmm, there’s a reader too? it wasn’t in the list, but I’ll check that at the store… So what exactly is the chem portal? is it just the exact version of the book, online?

the “reader” is the study guide/solutions manual

i had pederson, you should get both the book and the reader

sorry… so just to get it clear, what exactly do i need for 3a + 3al?

blippity bump

I never understood how to use the model kit… ><

my problem with the kit was once you made a model it was impossible to break them into separate pieces again. they were poorly made and after using them probably 10-15 times, i was like **** it.
