Does anyone know how easy/hard it is to get into this class? I'm a chem major and watching all the spots fill up is frightening.

my suitemate and i were both chem majors; we didn’t even take it until our sophomore years (me fall, her winter) and still made it out in 4

There are still spots open.

Any advice on how easy or difficult the class is? All I’ve heard at the moment is nightmare stories about how people are barely keeping afloat with the workload, or people thinking it’s the equivalent of a two class workload. I did well in chem6A and am doing well in 6B, but I’ve had little to no chem lab experience in high school and on top of that I’m taking 20 units next quarter

And sorry! I don’t mean to hijack anyone’s thread >.< would you recommend to waitlist too if all the spots are full?

Do I need to finish Chem 7L before Chem 140A?

^No .

if there are no consequences for your waitlisting, then what are you concerned about?

Sorry to resurrect this thread.
I’m currently 2nd on the waitlist for this class. If anyone has experience on this, what are my chances of getting in? I know about the 10% thing, but I’m not sure if that applies to chem 7L due to it being in high demand.
The reason I ask is that if I get in, I will have to change writing classes. (No big deal, though I’d rather do it soon)

Thanks in advance!

^There were 2 people that dropped from my section this quarter. You definitely have a chance.

There are also 2 secret sections that open up every quarter. Check the schedule of classes from previous.

I got into one of the secret sections. It’s really not that hard to predict haha.

silvercrystal - did you actually get into one of the secret sections, or was it waitlisted? and do you know what the enrollment number was? im waitlisted for one of them, but prof berniolles said the enrollment limit for those were all 0.

they don’t open up until later.

I emailed the chem depart advisor, and they said it was an invalid waitlist even though WebReg allowed us to waitlist for the class. do you think they’re planning to open up new sections, or was it just a mistake on WebReg to have these secret sections opened?

i could be remembering wrong, but it seems to be an invalid waitlist because they’ll open it without admitting those from the waitlist – so it’s basically a mad dash for the open sections once they secure rooms and TAs. (this way, those who got late registration appointments can’t complain too much)

So you recommend staying on this waitlist then? I was actually thinking exactly what you just said; it might be invalid now, but they might soon open up new lab sections since there were so many waitlisted.

if you can’t get into an open section, you should either

(1) waitlist for a section with the fewest people on the waitlist
(2) watch tritonlink like a hawk until the new sections open up

whether they open new sections isn’t determined by the presence of waitlisted students. this lab has been difficult to get into for over a decade. it’s only getting worse, but until they make new lab space, there is an actual physical cap on how many sections they can offer.

I think I’ll end up doing just that. I’ll probably just stay on this waitlist, even though it is, at the moment, invalid. I’ll just have to keep going back and watching tritronlink to see if these invalid sections open up in the future. Thanks!

xUCSDx - i got into one of the sections right when they opened. I was waitlisted for another time/section, however.
