So I'm taking chemistry at a community college along with Ethnic Studies and English and I'm going to be a freshman in the fall at UC Berkeley.

Basically, I'm taking Chem at CC so I could prepare for Chem at Cal. Hence, I was planning on retaking the class fall semester anyway. As for English and Ethnic Studies; I'm having those count for my requirements.

However, it looks like I might get a B in chem at CC. Mind you, it's actually pretty difficult here only because my teacher sucks. So what I'm wondering, is if I retake the chem class as planned, will the B in chem at CC look bad when I apply to med schools years later?

If you can drop the class without getting a W, i’d do that. If not then just take the B there is nothing you can do about it. Also not trying to be a ******, but if you can’t make an A at a CC chem class then what are you going to do with chem at Berkley? Its going to be much harder at Berkley and the whole “my prof. sucks” excuse won’t cut it. What if you get stuck with a bad prof at Berkley?

Make sure you learn from your mistakes and work hard your freshman year at Cal. I have seen a lot of freshman screw over their gpas and thus their chances for medical school by screwing around freshman year.

yeah I was actually asking myself that too. Hence the worry. But after talking to a lot of people, I decided that chem at Berkeley will suck in a different way. This teacher just sucks at preparing us. Book is too easy. Lectures are too easy. Pretty much everything is too easy. Except his tests are very hard. He also refuses to give any help. Plus it’s a fast pace summer class.

Of course, the class at Cal will be fast pace too, but the book will be more difficult, and a lot closer to the caliber of the tests. Of course, I’ll have to see for myself once the the class starts.

Thats a bad idea. You dont’ want to retake classes (especially pre-reqs) unless you have to (i.e. unless you fail a class or get less than a C in a pre-req). Med schools will see both grades and will wonder why you took the same class twice. Also, if you get anything less than an A+++ the second time around, it’s going to raise some red flags. Its in your best interest to only take classes once and at a 4 year university (even if not your home institution).

If it’s early enough to drop without getting a W, I would do that.

Basically, what Icarus said. This was a terrible idea, compounded by the fact you couldn’t make an A in a prereq at a CC. Nevertheless, there’s nothing you can do about it now except do your best at Cal.

Drop the chem class and be prepared to hit ti hard at Cal, the chem curve is pretty intense. You will be in a class full of strong students, don’t overload your schedule and don’t get behind

Your counselor is not the sharpest tool in the shed, is he? Goofy advice. You could have formally (or informally) audited the course and accomplished all the positives with none of the negatives.

Taking one class, out of all the pre-reqs, especially if it was a pre-chem intro would not be a major issue, taking it and getting less than an A in a CC summer class, not so great. Summer classes are rapid pace, but there is a reputation that they are easier, it is subtle, but many people seem to think that.

I believe she was being playful. I think that’s why she put the winking smile at the end.

Congrats, pianodancer! This may be a positive scare you had at CC. It’s easy to lose focus as a college freshman away from home for perhaps the first time. Stay focused and work as hard as you can. Good luck!
