I was just wondering what chem class I should take next year- I took AP Chem in sophomore year, I did really well all year but I got a 3 on the AP and I honestly dont remember much. Right now I have all my classes Tuesday-Thursday so I was trying to find out how I could keep that and have Mondays and Fridays off? Is that a good idea or no? Also, what classes do I have to register for, for example if I do Chem 21, do I have to do regular Chem 21L, Chem 21L Section, AND Chem 21L Lab? That sounds like a lot? Or should I take Chem 23L? Thank you so much!

You'd probably be better off taking 21 than 23. If you are willing to work really hard, take 23. For either course you have to take all components of the course. This means a recitation, a lab, and a lecture for chem 21.

is there any downside to taking 21 instead of 23?

It's two semesters instead of one.

And it goes really slow (IMHO).

Does semester of chem 21L count for the same as one semester of chem 23L, or is it only half a credit? and if i decide to drop out after one semester what happens?

How is it two semesters? I thought it was just for the fall? Where did you read that?

You take Chem 21L in the fall and Chem 22L in the spring. At other schools my friends generally say Gen Chem 1 and Gen Chem 2. 23 is just both of them in one.

If you drop out after one semester nothing happens. Each course is a full credit, so you get 2 credits for Chemistry over the course of the year. They're basically separate courses except you use the same book and whatnot. You do, however, have to take 22L or 23L to continue on to Organic, as well as for med school and whatnot.

for people that have finished their freshman year: how often does chem 21L9 take the entire alloted time? (i.e. 8:30 - 11:30)

For me, MAYBE once the entire semester. It just depends on you and your lab partner, and if you mess something up or not. Most of the time I usually got out with around an hour or two left. BUT we had 4 hour time slots for 21L, so it might be a little different for you guys. However, I hardly ever stayed the entire time for my 3 hour 22L lab, so I can't imagine you really ever would for 21L.

Wait, so you don't HAVE to take Chem 22L if you don't want to? Because I was leaning towards other classes and frankly don't want another Chem lab next year. I thought that you chose this course according to what your intended major is, and that only BME students take 22L. So is it required or just recommended or what?

haha, dude, relax. When you take chem 21, you don't sign a contract saying you'll take 22. A lot of my engineering friends stopped after chem 21 because that was all that was required for their majors. If you need a full year of chem, or if you need to take orgo, though, you'll have to take chem 22.

the reason i ask is because i would have to get from gross chem (west) at 11:30 to carr (east) at 11:40 if labs took the full time.

Also: does anyone know how many freshman usually take MATH 107? There's only one seat left in one section and I'm in the third window; but, getting that class would make things infinetely more simple.

quite a few take math 107, but not a huge number. i don't have an exact number, sorry, but you'll probably be able to get into some section. it might not be the one that you want, however. try emailing the professor if you dont get into the one you have to be in.

Jman- I was a Chem 21 and 22 TA last year so I had to leave after everyone in my lab was finished, and ninety-five percent of the time we were all done way before the lab was officially over. You'll more often than not have time to get food or go back to your dorm and sleep between lab and your class at Carr.
