Chem E Match

I'm having trouble choosing target schools for chemical engineering. I don't really know anyone either with a chem e background and my guidance counselor wasn't much help. So if you guys know of a good school in the north east U.S. for chem e, please post! I'm going to be a rising senior.

Here are some stats:

GPA: 90.44

SAT: 1920 (CR-550, 720-M, W-650)

SAT II: 740 Math II, 750 Chem

APs: Chem (I don't know my score unfortunately, the score got lost in the mail)

I'm going to take AP bio, micro, calc AB, psych in senior year. I also plan and retaking the SAT and taking the ACT once.

I'm not part of much EC's. But I am a very active member of Key Club and I hold a committee chair position. Isn't super big though :\ I've also done a nanotechnology summer at a hospital this summer.

Here are some things I'm looking for in a college/university:
- Preferably in NYS, if not in the North East
- In an urban setting or small urban setting
- For tuition, definitely something affordable. Probably no more than $20k, or $25k.

Nothing super impressive, haha. If you guys have any suggestions, please post!

Thank you!

I’m not familiar too much with New York schools, but you want to look for an accredited ChemE program.

[Accredited Program Search](http://main.abet.org/aps/AccreditedProgramSearch.aspx/AccreditationSearch.aspx)
Here’s a list of New York schools that are ABET accredited for BS in chemical engineering:
CUNY, City College
Columbia
Cornell
Manhattan College
Polytechnic Institute of NYU
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
State University of New York at Buffalo
Stony Brook University
Syracuse University
Cooper Union
University of Rochester

You’ll probably find some matches in that list.

Other programs you could consider but don’t match all your criteria:
U Conn
Penn State

But, it’ll be cheaper for you to stay in-state.

Good luck!

Northeastern
WPI
UMass Amherst is very well known for ChemE at the grad level
other state flagships

(MIT, Yale, Tufts - but are more selective)
Surprised that BU does not have ChemE

- For tuition, definitely something affordable. Probably no more than $20k, or $25k.

Do you mean $20-25K for everything? Tuition, fees, room, board, books?

Have you visited SUNY Buffalo?

I believe Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ is ranked # 2 or 3 for Chemical E for colleges whose highest degree is a Bachelor’s or Master’s, according to US News…

thanks for all the replies and match suggestions!

Well, the tuition part is not necessarily ground to that amount. There’s always financial aid. I mean, it’s always a large factor when choosing a college/uni for many people, but I won’t mind paying that extra amount for a better education. So, I’m willing to look at other schools that are a tad more expensive as well.

I haven’t visited buffalo. I am considering it though. However, it is very cold and the days are short there ):

I’ve seen that college while doing some searching online. I guess it’s an option for me, but I’m not sure if I’ll like the suburban environment. I’ll see if I can visit!

No…there is NOT always financial aid.

Not only do most schools not have much aid to give, many schools wouldn’t give a dime of free money to someone who can already pay $20=25k per year.

Frankly, if your family is saying that they’ll pay that much, then likely their EFC is much higher.

And, when you say that YOU won’t mind paying more, what do you mean? Do you have a large savings acct somewhere? where would YOU get the money to pay more?

YOU can only borrow 5500 without parent cosigners.

Be sure to have some financial safeties on your list and schools that will give you large merit for your stats.
