Chem Lab

Ok I really really really need some advice. I'm in a basic chemistry lab right now at a top university and I'm debating whether to drop it, change it to pass/fail, or keep it. I'm a freshman and have no idea what I'm majoring in, so I might not even need it. It is just a hard class for me, my hardest one, and I dread going to it. My problem is I need to keep at least a 3.0 GPA to keep my scholarships, and this is my only class that I think might ruin that. If I dropped it, I would still have 13 credits. I need to know by 6 pm tonight lol. Thanks.

Have you had any grades in the class?

Nope, that's the bad part. I have no idea how I'm doing in this class so far, and I won't get my first lab report back until Wednesday, but the drop/add deadline is today!

Ummm...I think you'll be fine. Just because the class is hard or not the most fun does not mean you won't perform decently in it.

I'm assuming you're also in a chem lecture class; i would stick with it. It is crucial that you keep up with the readings/assignments, and also get a lot of outside help (professors/tutors). I'm not sure if your school requires a science pre req, if it does then its beneficial. However to be honest if you have no interest in science at all, then i really don't see why you shouldn't drop it.

The best thing to do would be to talk to the professor and find out how you're doing, get his/her opinion of whether to drop.
Without that info, it's a hard call. Losing your scholarship is a bad thing...

Yeah it's kind of a bit late to talk to the GSI about it I think.. :( But I think I'm just going to take it pass/fail, so that way I will still get the credits for it but if I do end up doing horrible, then it won't affect my GPA. Good idea or no?

I suppose you could take it pass/fail, but then if it's a class required for your major then it won't count & you'll have to do it over. Might as well drop it unless you really need the units for some reason.

But, since you're having such a hard time in gen chem, then perhaps you should choose a major that doesn't require chem anyway. Gen chem is so basic and easy that if you don't get it, then you're really not cut out for a scientific major.

I second Pearlinthemist.
