Chem Major at Cal

I'm class of 2014, planning to enroll in the College of Chemistry at Berkeley. I'm wondering how rigorous and difficult to maintain a high GPA it will be for chem majors. I'm leaning towards a premed track, but I'm not hell-bent on it. However, I'd still like to maintain a high GPA for graduate school.

I read in some other threads that the classes chem majors are required to take are REALLY difficult, and unless you have a study group, you won't survive.

Would it be smarter to switch to another major, especially if you're leaning premed?

Thanks for any input :)

I am also curious about how the chemistry program is at Cal… although mine is in Letters & science (chemistry B.A.).

I think I saw a grade distribution chart for chem majors at Cal once… they were not very high >_> something like top 10% get A or A-?

Also, side note, how hard is it to transfer to CoC from letters & science? And the difference between chem in l&s and CoC.

:D

chem inside CoC is a major gpa killer, if you’re premed, do it only if you love chem, you are pro at it, and you’re willing to work hard.

if you want chem grad school though, it’s different

Yeah CoC is intense. Don’t expect to come out of it with your GPA intact.

I have heard that it is easy to transfer from L&S to CoC. Most don’t, so they accept most transfers.
