I am going to be a freshman at Indiana University this fall. I plan on majoring in Neuroscience and one day pursuing medical school. As I was looking at the medical school information website on Indiana University's website, it said that the first course of chemistry that pre-medical students should take is C117.

As I read the requirements for the class, it said that admission to the class required a chemistry placement test. I took AP Chemistry in high school, however, it was junior year and I got a solid B in the class. Should I proceed to take the chemistry placement exam anyways? If I do not get into the class, which chemistry class should I consider signing up for? Thanks.

You will take the chem placement test during orientation. If I remember correctly, it was an optional test you signed up for when you booked your orientation. As long as you know the basic stuff you learned in chem (SI units, how to balance equations, math, etc), you’ll test into C117 without any issue.

If not, you’ll test into C104, then take C117 and so forth. The sequence for premed tends to go:
C117-C341-C342-C343-N330 (C343 and N330 may be optional based on your major)
OR
C104-C117-C341-etc.

You take the CPE online. You’ll do fine on it, just keep google open in another tab while you take it! If you do not pass the CPE you should take Chem C103. Once you pass 103, you not longer need CPE placement to proceed to C117. I didn’t take C103, but I heard it’s a waste of time, first 4 chapters of C117 cover all of it.

This is what I learned. If you missed the CPE, you might not register for C117 unless you have AP score >4. Someone please tell me if I am wrong. My impression about Chem 117 is that the schedule is very bad. The class has 4 1-hour sessions on MTWF. It blocks out many opportunities for other courses. I really could not figure out why they could not just have three sessions of 1:15 for each. On the other hand, P221 is much better with lab session to be arranged with the instructor.

So I just took the placement test for C-117, and I passed. Since I have my schedule all planned out, I was a little worried about taking the class second semester since I am a pre-med student and want to get in all of the chemistry as soon as possible in order to be prepared for the MCAT. am I being silly, or is this something that I should worry about?

I’m in the same boat, I took the placement test a day late and was told I would have to take C117 during my second semester at the earliest. I think you’re perfectly fine being worried, as I was for a while, but the feeling eventually subsided. Although it was never my intention to take summer school, pushing C341 from second semester to summer seemed like an easy fix that would put me back on ‘track’. If there is another option, I’ll certainly take it, but I was finally able to convince myself it wasn’t going to be the end of the world and that I’ll do just fine, so hopefully you’ll be able to do the same! :)

Why do you have to take it second semester? I just looked and theres 41 spots left. I took the placement test way after the June 1st deadline and am taking S117. If it fits in your schedule, pick it up. Don’t let that hour scheduling at orientation be your definitive schedule. I’ve changed mine around completely since then. Theres no required permissions to take C117 after you’ve placed into it via the test, as far as I know: by which I mean scheduling doesn’t care when you took the test.

Really? My adviser made it seem like if you didn’t make the June 1st deadline, you weren’t allowed to take it, no matter what. I would much rather start taking it first semester rather than second so that I may move onto Organic during spring. Did you email the Chemistry department and ask or did you just sign up? Also, do you think it would be too late to drop one of my classes and sign up for Chem now?

I was actually going to start in C341 based on AP test results, but was told they suggest taking their 117 class again even if you technically test out, so i talked to a few people in the chem dept and they suggested taking the placement exam and taking S117 if i placed into it (i think july 7th she told me this). I did that (july 8th) and decided to take S117. I signed up for it without any problems. If you score a 24 or higher on the test, you can take S117. If you score too low, you will have to take an 0-level class (high-school level) I think. Otherwise it will place you into C117. When I looked this morning, there were 41 places left in C117 and I think theres 15 or so in S117 left, so you should have no problem dropping a class and picking up chemistry, as far as I know. There is a fee for changing classes; something like $8/day, so figure out your changes and make them all in one day. Good Luck!

I should apologize, I didn’t mean to hijack this thread, it’s just my situation was so similar I figured the responses would help michplusdich as well. Again, sorry if it upsets you!

If I were to switch a class for it, I’d most likely take C117. The reason is that my mythology class is my only viable option to drop, it’s only 3 credits and C117 is 5. Right now I’m sitting at 17 credit hours, so switching would bump me up to 19. I’m sure I can handle that, but I’d rather avoid the more advanced class with that many. I think I’ll go ahead and shoot the Chem department an Email asking them if it would be okay. Yeah, I remember my adviser telling me about that, this is the only change I should need, so I think I’ll be okay.
