Next semester I am going to start taking classes for my premed requirements. It will only be 3 classes Chem, Phys, and Bio. The First semester of each of those classes. I will not be taking any other classes and it will be 12 credits. Is this a bad idea?

A bad idea because you think it’s too few credits? Twelve credits is usually the min. required to be considered full time. If anything goes wrong and you have to drop a class you could end up part-time. Do you have any funding sources where this could be a problem?

Each of these classes has a lab so you will be in class a lot. How will this affect your other commitments, ECs?

If you are concerned about the content/difficulty of the three classes then that totally depends on your history as a student. Have you taken heavy science loads before (hs/college) and has it turned out well? These three classes are not hard but there is a lot of content. If you have a habit of falling behind and catching up later in the semester, then you probably will have a problem taking these three together, otherwise it’s not a problem and you could probably add another class.

Taking all of them at once doesn’t really make sense. At the very least take Chemistry to make sure you have time to get in Gen Chem 1&2, O Chem 1&2 and Biochem before the end of junior year. Each of those classes may be considered weed-out classes so you are putting unnecessary pressure on yourself. Take other core classes and pad your GPA while you adjust to living away from home, meeting new people, learning time management. You have plenty of time to get the prereqs in, and you will want time to do research, volunteer in both clinical and non-clinical settings. Along the way, you need to have fun, make friends, gain life experience and possibly get a job to make some cash.
