Chem prep books - review conflicts

OK, DD will be taking the Chem SAT II's in June. Picking up books hopefully tonight

After looking around CC, there are references to both Barron's and PR as very good in different ways - when I go to Amazon and B&N both have complaints about errors in the books

McGraw Hill has the most good review but seems stacked and rarely mentioned on CC

Kaplan is often behind Barrons and PR and since 2008 was released in December the reviews on Amazon etc are not qualitative.

Which should I buy and are the error's a problem like they state in the reviews

Thanks

What is her background in chemistry? What score does she want?

Um…PR is what I studied but I am afraid it doesnt cover everythng. Stay away from barrons. get kaplan and learn anything not in PR but study PR first no matter what its very important that you known everyting in PR inside out. im taking the SAT2 in may :/

I’m going to bump because I have the same question as the OP.

I’m currently in Honors Chem, and would like to get 700+. I have the PR book, but haven’t really started studying. Taking in June.

does the barron’s not prepare you enough??

you try studying barrons if you want. but i wouldnt

Yes, i’m very confused as well…

I heard that Kaplan was pretty good, so I’m currently using an older edition one of my friends gave to me.

I dont think I want to go through barrons… and not too much of a fan of pr…
and havent really heard much about mcgraw hill either, though their books really suprised me for the SAT I. I’ve never really heard much about them, but the grammar sections in that book was amazing. it helped me so much.

Somehow, I did not get the notification e-mails saying that replies happen. Sorry for not responding. I’ll have to check my settings.

Today, daughter took the Chem SAT in the college Board book. Got a 740 without beginning any prep. So anyhow, we would like to keep that as a minimum and better yet, why not an 800. :)

Background is Honors Chem last year and AP Chem this year. Will be prepping for and taking the AP exam.

Any new thoughts?

PR should be enough, because it seems like she already knows a lot..

good job

again no e-Mail notification and I did “re-subscribe”

Anyhow thanks DankStarbursts - I’ll pick up the PR tomorrow. (I ended up skipping last night when I realized that we had the “Real SAT II” book in the house for a first test today.) BTW Starbursts are awesome except for that minty strawberry flavor they made a while ago.

Thanks also to all the other responses. If she gets through all the PR and has spare time, Kaplan will be the next round. I will avoid the Barron’s.

I am going to warn her to watch for the mistakes though that I read about in the Amazon and B&N reviews. I wonder if corrections are ever publicized?

BTW we also have to deal w/ Math II on the same exam thus limited time. And all about 3 weeks after AP’s and one week before finals.

I took the real SAT Bio and got a 780. Ended up with a 710 on the test. The real college board tests are generally easier and I would not look at them as a bar. take a PR test as they are way more accurate

Good to know how accurate that are. Getting the PR tomorrow.

im not saying tho that your D is not capable of 740 im just saying from my experiences i dont believe in the “real” sat2 tests released by CB since they are like 20 years old

well the bio one is not even 5 yrs old… it says on the test

Does the age of the test actually matter? Are they changing the content so drastically that the tests are inaccurate? The copyright on the book is 2002 w/ first publication being 1998. So unfortunately, mine has to be at least 6 years old but I bought this last year when I could still buy this older book feeling that at least it was one more “real” subject test. MB that was a bad idea. I was also contemplating purchasing the new version “The Official Study Guide of All SAT Subject Tests” for last practice exam before the “real” one.

CCFanatic - I did not take it that you felt D was incapable. I appreciated knowing that the CB test may not reflect a real score.

Well they re old thats all I;m saying atleast mine are. My book had a red and dark blue cover if that helps and I bought it 3 years ago.

Final Verdict: PR for Chem material review (plus any practice tests you can get your hands on since practice is everything)

Barrons=Epic Fail

Good luck on the SAT2 CHEM

Mine is the dark blue/red also.

Took two stores but I got the PR yesterday.

When you say “any practice tests you can get your hands on”, what is your suggested source? Kaplan, Sparknotes, Barrons, something I don’t know?

do problems. doing something is better than doing nothing

Dam!! I Have Barrons And Have Been Review That Alone For Weeks

Am I Going To Do Bad??

Omg Omg
