Can someone explain to me why the sulfur in SO2 can have two double bonds with the oxygens and still have a lone electron pair? Wouldn't that give it 10 electrons and violate the octet rule?

sulfur is in the 3rd period so it can violate the octet rule. bonds/lone pairs can extend into the 3d orbital.
