I took 3BL with Viernes and if you fell asleep in Pedersen's, you will most likely fall asleep in Viernes. He speaks rather slowly, but very clearly, in a somewhat monotonous tone. It is very unique and a lot of people commented on his manner of speech.

I've heard the class is extremely quick, as in you learn a lot in a really short time. I took Vollhardt for 3B and I was looking at the exam Viernes had for the summer up in Latimer and Viernes' exam was way harder. I took 3A with Frechet and found the material manageable. With Vollhardt's section, I often needed more time to consolidate the information since there were a LOT of reactions so I found this part to be a bit more difficult. However, 3B is just a lot more memorization than 3A.

I took 3B/ 3BL in the summer of 2008 w/ Viernes and did really well (A+'s) in both. And I'm not a super genius or anything. I honestly thought his exams were extremely fair and his teaching style really worked for me - whenever he introduced a really big reaction, he would give us a couple minutes in class to work on a problem and that made me want to pay attention. It is fast, but we had weekly quizzes, which were my incentive to keep up. He can get monotonous, but I was so scared of him that I never fell asleep in class (LOL). Lab is even easier than 3AL. Basically, taking this class over the summer w/ Viernes is pretty much the best thing I ever did to myself. But be prepared to work pretty hard - it's not an easy class, but I personally found the material to be really cool and that made it go a lot better.
