Hi, I got a 4 on the AP chem exam and I was debating whether to take the regular chem class or the honors class. Is there much of a difference? What do you guys think?

Seeing that Weare is teaching 6AH, definitely go with 6A. I took him for 6BH last year and no one could understand a thing he was saying.

You’ll probably learn more in 6A and it’ll be an easier class too.

take regular. ppl who scored 5’s on the AP struggled with the honors series.

Take regular.

chem honors series, however, set the average to an A- because they dont wanna punish people who take honors series. If you get an average score on the exam, you will get an A- instead of B-/C+ in regular chem class.

take regular unless you love physics. the material they cover in the honors series is meant to challenge your brain, and is far above and beyond what you need to know for things like the GRE and MCAT.

if you got a 4, you cant get credit for 6A. for most medical schools you need one year of general chem. if you can’t take chem6A and don’t want to take 6AH… what other chem classes are you supposed to take to complete one year of general chem. to my understanding, most medical schools don’t take ap credit.

^^ if you already have credit for 6A, then, can you start with 6B and go on to 6C and 6BL? (or 7L or whatever it’s called now)

if you need to fulfill your one year requirement and got a 4, you can take one of two options:

(1) re-take chem 6a. you won’t get credit but you’ll get a grade on your transcript.

(2) talk to your college, there’s some way they can put chem 6a on your transcript. i don’t know what it looks like exactly, but it’s to indicate that you placed out of it at ucsd, and have taken the equivalent and demonstrated competency in the subject.

Can’t you also take Chem 120A?

in place of general chemistry?

no.

general chemistry = lower-division

it’s a silly idea, but what’s also silly is that i could apply to med school and they’d require me to take BILD 1 and 2 even if i already had a 5 on the AP exam and PhD in biology.

alright, i think i understand.
why would anyone take chem6A again if they could just get that course on their transcript?
if i dont get credit for chem6A (if i take it again), will there be any problems when i apply for med school?

some counselors don’t know very much.

and your med school’s interested in your grade, not the credits. (you could get a C- in genchem and get the same number of credits as someone who got an A+, get what i’m saying?)

I thought that the premed requirements were general or inorganic chem.

the majority of general chemistry is inorganic chemistry (as opposed to organic/physical/analytical/bio), but the stuff you learn in 120A is not going to help you on the MCAT.

from ucsd’s website:
“One year (2 semesters or 3 quarters) of college-level General Chemistry (biochemistry is acceptable)”

in other words, general chemistry has a lot of inorganic chemistry, but 120A is NOT general chemistry.

What? I have to take classes I AP-ed out of if I want to apply to med schools?

there were TWO options.

Yes. Med schools don’t care what you AP-ed out of. Just because you got a 5 in AP chem does not mean you’d get an A in a gen. chem class in college.

It also depends on the medical school. Some actually do let you AP out of one term of chemistry or biology.

hey, i was in the same position as u. i got a 4 on the AP chem test, and needed the 3quarters of gen chem for med school requirements. i just retook chem6A even though it doesnt count for credit, med schools will be able to see the grade i got when i took it at ucsd…so they might factor that into the GPA.

the chem honors series is wayy more difficult, but the curve is definitely more generous…

i guess what it breaks down to is, do u want the credit to count for your GPA? also, u can try to petition to be able to retake 6A for credit…say something about needing to strengthen your fundamentals…u took the test too long ago…i dunno MAYBE they’ll let u take 6A for credit, and maybe they won’t. but, there’s no harm in petitioning…worse thing that happens is u wont get credit for retaking 6A.
