Yeah I also tested out of Chem but I was wondering if the class is honors-scaled meaning will you get more points added to your GPA for getting an A? I got a 5 on the AP test so I’m considering taking it and I’m trying to weigh my options here. If it counts the same as the chem 6a I doubt I’ll put myself through that.

There’s no such thing as a honors-scaled GPA (meaning that an A = 5) in college. If you AP’d out of the chem 6 series, you will not get credit for taking the chem 6 series in your UC gpa. However, if you take the honors sequence, then you will get credit for those classes.

I took the chemistry placement test a few days ago and got the recommendation of 6AH/6A. Would it be wise for me to take the honors series if I am a pharmacological chemistry major?

if you get a 5 on the AP exam, you won’t get credit for 6AH.

the honors series is for those who are interested in the physics and math of chemistry. if you want some extra challenges/related classes to pharmacology, i’d recommend any of the upper-division or graduate-level organic chemistry and biochemistry courses.

Chem 152/252 - synthesis
Chem 154/254 - mechanisms of organic rxns
Chem 157/257 - natural products chemistry
Chem 118 - pharmacology & toxicity
Chem 116/216 - enzymes & kinetics

any of those are infinitely more helpful and interesting than taking the honors series.

I don’t think there’s an option to ask for them to place Chem6A on your transcript for an AP. The student in my year had to either take Chem6A for no credits/GPA at UCSD or taking Chem6AH. They recently (just last fall) made it so that chem6A and chem6AH are the same… if you can could the so many more hours you place into honors to learn nearly twice as much at a faster pace the same. If you needed to “review” the subject, they’ll just tell you to take it. There’s no trying to get it on your transcript from AP credits. They won’t even note that you passed up to equivalent of chem 6A, they just note how many AP credits you got (well that’s what my unofficial transcript looks like). Also, if you DO decide to take the honors just to replace Chem6A, you can simply just drop back into the regular series for Chem6B and chem6C.
For the pharmacological chemistry major, it doesn’t really matter, I have a friend who took the regular series and did better than I did (but she also did study and whole lot more than I did).

Since many medical schools want a full year of general chemistry and do not accept AP credits, can I take Chem 20B, Chem 20C, and Chem 7L? Will that count? I got a 4 on the ap exam so I don’t want to take Chem 20A.

tell me again, what’s chem 20A?

(no it doesn’t count - they want a full year of lecture, AND 7L. it’s nice that you don’t want to retake 6A, but if you completely disregard their requirements then they will completely disregard your application.)

oh my bad! i meant to say 6A, b, c
thanks!
