ChemBE H/S elective selection

Hi everyone,

I'm an incoming JHU freshman majoring in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and hoping to do premed as well, and I'm having trouble finding a suitable H/S elective for my first semester. I know medical schools like to see 2 semesters of English classes plus a concentration in some other area, but after looking at the class times for suggested first semester ChemBE classes, there's no way I can take another class that spans 2 or 3 days per week, so those types of classes would have to wait. Any suggestions about what I should/can take?

I’m a chemBE and I took philosophic classics or basically philosophy 101 my fall freshman semester, its pretty easy but the papers were a pain to write. How many credits are you taking?

hmm, I’ll look into that, thanks.

I’m planning on taking 17 credits, but that includes Calculus III, which takes up 3 mornings and one afternoon out of my week, on top of physics w/lab and chem w/lab.

Takle what interests you. Keep in mind you will need W credits. I took German Elements, which was 4.5 credits but met daily. I also took a course on socialism, which was 3 credits and ran once a week for 3 (not the easiest class in the world). Consider maybe an expository writing course, although they usually meet 3-4 times a week.

Why can’t you take classes that meet more than once a week?

well, lecture classes take up most of my mornings, I have 2 labs to take, and then Calculus III and the intro to engineering course are short but both meet in the middle of the afternoon, and so far all the classes I’ve seen would interfere.

Maybe I’m missing something - when Hopkins says H/S elective, do they mean H and S, or any class with an H or an S designation?

Humanities or Social Science. Either one (or both if you want). I would advise against taking 2 labs (chem and physics?). Both meet for 3 hours and they are very irritating to deal with. Take one this year, and the other one another time. You’ll be glad you did.

You know you posted this exact question on the Hopkins Forums and got a number of responses there as well…
