I’m really shocked but he’s not unhappy at all. Maybe they read into that in the essay.
The way they did the “not accepted” was not very professional in my opinion. Said something like go pick another major from the list online of those still available.

@purple1968 IN STATE? OMG.
OMG to @persons99 as well. Same for you? - accepted to University - but “pick another major?”

I don’t guess there are any Engineering majors on that list?

Both of you have very, very, very impressive stats. WOW! You should be very proud of your accomplishments.

Feeling badly for you both. Unexplicable.

Well this makes me feel better about my rejection then.

Not all that upset because it probably would’ve been too expensive anyway but still I’m surprised

Yup, have to pick another major.
And thank you!

@persons99, sorry to keep addressing this, but that ADCOM decision makes no logical sense imho! You are in-state and your stats are outrageously good. I don’t get it. You say you have to pick another major, which implies you were not flat out denied, but what? accepted to the U, but not chem e as major? Did you have a second major listed? (Not that you should have needed it).

Did you by chance apply to the likes of MIT, Cal-Tech, Berkley and Stanford? There seems to be a trend with ADCOMS, when an applicant with competitive stats demonstrates interest in U’s with a higher rep, the ADCOMS decide to cut you loose rather than having you decline admission. Strange, but it helps their acceptance percentage. This theory doesn’t even make sense if they accepted you to UT, but are asking you to choose from majors that are left!

I just don’t get it. I’d hire you to tutor one of my kids to improve in the reading section of the ACT. I don’t know that I have seen a 36 in the Reading section before. And as you see those listing acceptances, most engineering majors prefer the SAT because their math makes up larger percentage of the score.

If UT Chem E HAPPENS to be your top choice - call your Admissions counselor - with complete humility - and ask if there was a red flag in you application, because it will be valuable feedback . . . .

I would want to know - if they saw a red flag - and / or if possibly they made an error.

Let me qualify this suggestion - as I am only a parent of a student going thru the process for the first time. Maybe you should ask your GC for an opinion.

Good luck to you!

I was not flat out denied because they offer automatic admission to the school for students within the top 7%. I was only denied my major (first was Chem E, second was BME).
I did apply to both Berkeley and Stanford, but I was still pretty set on going to UT.
I did call the admissions office, or rather my father did. Not sure what came of it just yet. I’ll post when I do.
Thank you!

To clarify: auto admission is for in state students in top 7% of their class, and only guarantees admission to the school itself.

I was rejected chemE

2040 SAT
33 ACT (unreported)
ClassRank: 7/440 (reported) 5/420 (actual)
Good EC’s about 150hrs volunteering soccer football several school organizations
I was born in Mexico but I’m a US Permanent Resident and I live and attend public school in Texas so I’m an in-state applicant
Admittedly didn’t spend much time on my essays, and I submitted my application with minimal recommendations and on the second to last day before the deadline (idk if that affected my decision)
I also reported that I applied to Stanford and Northwestern
I think I’m going to put my whole story on another thread b/c I’m unclear on what to do now b/c I was set on UT

I’m in state btw.

@HungryHippo231 Oh dear, you are the third TX resident so far to post with strong stats and rejected from Chem E. Did you get a second major? Or do you get to choose from “the list” ?

A couple things stick out from what you posted (in addition to not giving enough effort to the application process, which may haunt you until you have resolution).

One is your unreported ACT - unreported because it was taken later? The chart that I pulled up equated a 33 ACT to a 2190 SAT, so your unreported 33 ACT is actually markedly better than you reported 2040 SAT score. Maybe for Engineering there are specific component scores that you need to compare, like Math and English, not sure.

Second standout is your minority status. I would think this would be a plus for you.

My ACT was from this past December so that’s why it went unreported. I think subconsciously (along with some procrastination on my part) I didn’t put my best foot forward on my essays b/c I figured UT chemE was a shoe-in when compared to the more selective schools I applied to. I’m thinking about appealing using my new class rank (which is hardly an improvement) as a method to present my ACT and be reconsidered. I personally know one girl who was accepted chemE who won’t be attending UT so there’s at least one “spot” that won’t be filled and I’d guess there will be at least a few others.

I got accepted to ChemE like a month ago. In state. No ranking.

3.98 GPA

I got paced from ut also … And I have decent stats … U can check my posts but the thing is appealing won’t work unless u have somethjng drastically different so idk @HungryHippo321
I’m still planning on appealing but meh … I’m on the wait list either way … If there r spots I think I can get one
