I am a junior in hs, and I am wondering if I major in ChemE at UIUC, would I be able to complete a premed sequence too, or is that overkill. Also, how do engineers fare in the med admissions scramble?

ChemE's, as far as I know, complete all of the required premed courses in their regular course of study, except for biology, which you'd have to take as an elective.

UIUC's ChemE is a killer. I wouldn't suggest ChemE if interested in med school.

Don't do it man!

^I'm with sang. If you want to be a doctor I wouldn't go this route, your gpa will suffer. Sadly, most doctors I know have journalism or english undergrad degrees. I know one who has a chemistry degree, but he struggled to get into med school.

If you are smart enough and think you can handle it I would go biosystems engineering instead of chemE at least. I just don't think it would be worth it. If you want to be a doctor do what doctors do.

chemE will murder your GPA. I remember getting B's in chemE's and A's in my "other" engineering elective classes (civil, mechanical).

Obviously though, if you work hard and have it in you, anything is possible.

But don't expect med school admission to give you any sympathy for a lower GPA because you took chemE.

Sigh....

My friends still make fun of me for getting an A in Intro to MechE and a B in Intro to MSE. :(
