Chemical Engineering and English double major

Would a chemical engineering and English double major be possible? I enjoy reading and writing, and I really want the experience of university courses in English and creative writing. However, I'm also interested in chemical engineering and working as an engineer after graduation.

I'm willing to drop one of the majors after sophomore year, depending on how my interests change. However, during the first two years, would it be possible to stay on track for a double major? After looking at the distribution requirements, I think I'll just be filling most of them anyway.

Thanks for any advice.

Frankly…I don’t think that would be possible. Assuming you have advanced placement to get out of general chemistry and calculus as a freshman, that still leaves you with 22 courses for the Chem Engineering ABET degree (including prereqs and senior requirement) and 14 courses for the English major, which already adds up to 36 - the average number of courses that Yalies take over their 4 years. That’s without even fulfilling your social science or foreign language distributional/skills requirements.

That being said, it’s quite misguided to think you have to major in English to get “the experience of university courses in English and creative writing.” You’d have room to take a few or even several courses in the English dept. - you just wouldn’t have enough room to fulfill a second major.

ETA: Also, you don’t have to think of it as “dropping” a major after your first two years, because you don’t even have to declare your major till the end of sophomore year in the first place.

Thanks for the response. So I could stay on track for both majors until the end of sophomore year, and then major in whichever one I’m more interested in?

You can definitely fulfill science prereqs while taking a couple of English courses on the side. It just wouldn’t be possible to pursue both majors the whole way.

Thanks for the response. I guess I’ll take the required courses for both English and chemical engineering during the first two years, and decide after sophomore year.
