Well I'm in a dilemma.
I'm currently a sophomore (going to be a junior after this semester) Chemical Engineering major at UT-Austin (ranked 5th in the nation). I have a decent GPA (according to my counselor in the career center) and I've applied to over 30-40 internships from companies such as BP, Exxon, Shell, BHP Billiton, Merck, Procter and Gamble, Lubrizol, Pepsi, Frito-Lay,etc. I haven't gotten a SINGLE call at all and I'm completely disappointed. I've been working and studying non-stop along with EC activities but I still haven't been able to get even my foot through the door for an interview. Is the market that bad or am I doing something wrong? Is it too early , as a sophomore, for an internship? I know a guy who graduate with CS/Computer Engineering from my school and he got an internship around his sophomore/junior year. I'm baffled by what I'm doing wrong.

It’s definitely not too early, and the market isn’t bad for engineers.
Hm…does your school offer career showcases? If so, go to those and meet recruiters! Honestly, the best way to get an interview is to have face-time with recruiters. Also, are you a part of any organizations such as SHPE, NSBE, SWE, etc? Large national organizations have national conferences that many companies flood to, so definitely check those out. I attended one of the national conferences last year and was able to get 2 internship offers as a freshman.
Good luck! Trust me, the hard work will pay off.
