I applied for Chemical Engineering and submitted my application close to the deadline (November 29). I have good stats (Auto-admit because of top 1% rank, 2310 SAT, good ECs for math and science, etc.) so I thought that I have a good chance to get into Cockrell.
However, I have heard this class (2020) is the largest applicant pool UT has had. Do you guys think I won’t be able to get into ChemE because of the number of seats they have? Does my submitting of my application close to the deadline affect this? Also, does UT-Austin “kick” other students out of a Major to make room for another, more qualified student (I’ve read that they do this somewhere on CC but no one said anything about it)?
@SuperTop123 Everyone who applies to Cockrell goes through the holistic review process. That includes in state auto-admits. So by applying by the deadline you are fine in that regard. ChemE is one of the more competitive programs so yes some auto-admits won’t get in.
No they don’t kick people out of a major as long as they are keeping the minimum GPA required and making progress toward graduation. There will naturally be people who don’t do that or who transfer or change majors which is how space frees up for transfers and people who change majors sophomore year.
Thanks.
Also, if I put my 2nd choice major as Mechanical Engineering (2nd biggest Engineering program at Cockrell behind Electrical), I should be pretty safe right?
Actually, what I really want to know is:
Does when I submitted my application matter? Do I have a significantly less chance to get the major I want (btw I chose my backup major as MechE, which is larger than chemE) because I submitted somewhat late (not very last day though)??
@SuperTop123 No as long as you submitted before the deadline you are fine. The benefit of apply early for auto-admits is that when you get your notice that you have been accepted into the university but a decision on your major is still pending you can do your housing application. Later on when UT assigns dorm rooms, priority is based on when the housing application was submitted.
Another potential benefit of applying early is that if your stats are better than what UT thinks the cutoff will be for your chosen major you might get an earlier decision. Some people found out November 17 or thereabouts. For everyone else decisions are after the deadline.
@K20903 Ah okay. Thanks so much! I really appreciate it. Now I can relax a bit and enjoy the break.
Happy Holidays!
