Chemical engineering or data science

I’m currently in the first year of the Computer Science degree specializing in data science, but I’m not enjoying coding that much but I really like maths. I’m thinking of switching to Engineering will it be a right option?

How many coding classes do you need for your current degree versus math?

Engineering requires two years of foundational math, but after that it’s all applied subjects and labs/projects.

The best major with more math than the data science major would probably be math.

Do you like science as well? Engineering isn’t just math. If you like math you could do a math major, or perhaps statistics or maybe data analytics within the business school.

If you do statistics or data analytics, you will have to learn coding. Statistics will have less of it in the actual academic program, but the career path in statistics uses a lot of coding and that’s only going to increase over time (although of course you could always major in statistics and then not go into the field later). Data analytics is pretty similar to data science - less computer science, but still quite a bit of coding.

If you really like math you always have the option to major in math. You might also consider physics or even chemistry. Economics is also an option, although at the undergraduate level it sometimes is not very math-heavy (depends on the department).

Engineering is a potential option too! There is a lot of math but also a lot of other applied sciences.
