Chemical Engineering Scholarships

Hi! I’m currently a high school senior and will be majoring in chemical engineering next year. I haven’t had much luck in finding scholarships solely for chemical engineers and was wondering if you guys knew of any?

Your best bet is applying to universities that have ABET accredited chemical engineering and give merit scholarships.

U Toledo is generous for example, and maybe others, it would depend on your GPA and test scores.

But if you are a senior, merit deadlines are fast approaching or have passed already (for example Ohio State).

Which state do you live in? What is your GPA, test scores?

Where have you applied so far and are any affordable?

If you are female, there is the society for women engineers. They act as a clearing house for a lot of scholarships. the deadline for freshmen is in May. https://scholarships.swe.org/applications/login.asp

There are government scholarships for engineers.

There are private industry ones, but you are most likely to find these through the engineering department at your school(s).

Have you got your university spot already? You are just looking for outside scholarships?

Yes I’ve already confirmed my university spot, mainly looking for outside scholarships to supplement merit scholarships

4.0 GPA and 32 ACT

Which school? Have you looked on their site for departmental scholarships? Do you have any major chem eng employers in your state? (industry, not academic/research). As you know, your fellow chem eng aspirants are high stats students competing for the same money. Some of the somewhat dirtier industries may well have scholarships. look at mining/industrial chemical companies in your state.

Not all schools allow stacking of scholarships. Some will reduce their aid by the amount of outside scholarships. Check the school website to see what their policy is.

How much aid do you need? Most outside scholarships are small and not renewable. You may be able to cover books with outside scholarships, but I don’t think you can cover a sizable chunk of tuition for 4 years.

Did you apply to any financial safeties? The Univ. of Kansas costs ~$27k for state residents. You qualify for a $5k/year grant. Your said in another thread that even with high medical expenses your parents can pay ~$15k/year, and you can take the ~$5500/year federal student loan. If you work summers you can earn the balance. Make sure you have a financial safety first, then work in funding more expensive schools.

I think she could cover a lot of tuition/costs with outside scholarships. She said she’s looking to supplement MERIT scholarships, so why wouldn’t the school allow stacking of outside scholarships?

You do have to watch what scholarships can be used for. My daughter ran into ‘tuition only’ scholarships and for the first time this year she had excess funds that she coudln’t use on other things like books, living expenses, or insurance. Still very nice to have all tuition covered.

I say keep looking. If you are going to an instate school, look locally at service club (Elks, DAR, American legion) awards.
