Asking for a friend, so forgive, if the terminology isn't quite right.
He just completed his freshman year and has applied to both majors. He REALLY wants to do the Chemical Eng. major, but fears he won't get in. If he is accepted to the Material Eng. major and goes with that, does that close the door on Chem. Eng.?

How best to proceed to get into the Chem Eng. major?

Not sure when you can apply for Chem E, but he can just apply next time they accept applications. Just because you get into MSE doesn’t mean you can’t apply into Chem E.
That being said, if he has to wait a year and already has all the pre-reqs and can’t take the major classes without being in the major…he may have to decide if it’s worth the wait.

^ Thanks for the info. I guess the confusion was if you were “stuck” with MSE, once admitted. If you can reapply to Chem, then I guess it can’t hurt to go with MSE to take the pre-reqs.
If you have any other thoughts on Chem E, I would love to hear them.

Majors are not binding at the UW. I’m currently in 2 (Math and Computer Science) and am considering signing up for chemistry. I’m not necessarily going to stick with my major in math, but I had the prereqs and being in the majors itself allows me to sign up for classes in that major with greater priority.
If your ‘friend’ doesn’t get into the major, tell him not to worry. Many people have to reapply (I have some friends that applied to Computer Science 4 times), but it’s risky.

He can potentially sign up for majors courses. He just has to petition to get into them. The big problem though is that Chem E courses only count towards the Chem E major (and maybe paper science), so if he petitions to get into the courses they will be worthless unless he can get into the major later on. (If he petitions to get into them, takes one or two and does poorly, he will probably have no chance of actually getting into the major after that).
