chemical or materials?

I don't know which type of engineer I want to be, so which one should I pick to ensure that I can maximize my opportunities in the future?

I'd say that Chemical is a broader and more versatile degree.

perhaps but one thing to consider is the fact that everything is made out of materials and everything is pretty broad

i say chemical, cuz chemicalE also do material, if u only do material you are limited to material only. I am going to study chemE in UCSB

Does that mean materials engineers can't do the work of a chemical engineer?

No MatSE cannot do chemE at all but chemE can do the work of MatSE. In fact my prof is working with carbon nanotubes, a seemingly materials area. ChemE has that same advantage with environmental and, to a point, mechanical.
