Chemical or mechanical?

I want be a chemical engineer and was wondering what to major in. I had originally thought I would major in chemical engineering but a chemical engineer I know said that jobs were hard to find. He suggested that I major in civil or mechanical with a minor in chemistry.what do you think would be better?

If you like chemistry and good at it then by all mean go for chemical engineering. Jobs for chemical engineering are good. Check with your department for internship postings and you will see. If you major in something you don’t like, chances are you won’t get the top job you hope for. On the other hand, if you understand chemistry and have good GPA after graduating, you will get the job of your choice.

Some people in life will unintentionally direct you the wrong way just because…

Why would you major in mechanical engineering if you want to be a chemical engineer? Just do chemical engineering. That is clearly what you want to do.

Jobs aren’t that hard to find in chemical engineering. It will actually be fairly easy if you graduate with a 3.2+ GPA and an internship/co-op under your belt. Also, I would hesitate to tell a person about to enter college that ChemE is about chemistry. There is a lot of chemistry, but I can guarantee you that a high schooler’s idea of chemistry is much different than the chemistry a ChemE student studies. It’s mostly physical chemistry, as opposed to general or organic, which can seem like entirely different fields.
