Chemistry and Bio

So I need to take both tests by the January deadline...Initially I was only taking chem, BUT i did HORRIBLE on the Lit SAT II (640)

So does anyone have tips for preparing for both tests within a month?
I'm panicking now...

640 isn't "horrible," but may i suggest taking a crack at lit again? it'll look like you have strengths in various subjects rather than just straight up in the sciences..

well, i got a 610 in lit the first time and 640 the second time...should i take it a 3rd time? (these scores are for princeton)
i got a 770 in math II though, so i still need 2 more subject tests and i only have 1 test date...

i'm so worried

oooh i see. dang this is a tough one.

well if you decide to do chem along with BIO, here's my advice:

chem - PR and Barrons. Go through PR first and just.. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW ALL THE MATERIALS. hands down. take maybe one test from its practice tests. then read through all of Barrons (reading through PR will help you figure out what the excess parts of Barrons are. but if you're aiming for an 800, be careful, because sometimes those superflous facts sometimes end up as a question or two. then, just take practice test after practice test. i think i took 6 before i took the real test. (790 GDI I KNEW I'D BE CLOSE :()

as for bio, pureeee memorization. i'd go with kaplan's (i heard barrons is just EXCESSIVELY excessive for bio) book.

yay good luck :)

Barron's isn't excessively excessive for bio, it's actually rather reasonable. Barron's goes overboard sometimes, but with sat ii bio, it's pretty much on-target, in my point of view. (now on the other hand, Barron's ACT, Barron's AP Physics C... those are awful.) Unless your goal is like a 700, I recommend the barron's over any other prep book except for PR, I used Barron's alone and got an 800. PR is also good and the formatting is a bit better I think. I think Kaplan's doesn't cover enough information for bio, which has always been a problem with Kap.

i didn't take chem, my experience with bio is that, yes, it's ALL memorization, there's no way around that. the review books have condensed all the material for you so just read it very closely, because it's packed with info. do the practice problems at the end of each chapter (in barron's), for metabolic processes like respiration and photosynthesis, make sure you can map them out, DO read the side notes and tips in the margins of Barron's because they are actually HELPFUL this time around. just a tip: you are supposed to choose either Eco or Molecular BEFORE opening the test book, but a lot of students simply flip through and look at the problems for each, then choose based on what they think is easier. I didn't actually do this, because I knew I wanted to do Molecular, but others did.

barrons chem is a bit overboard on some stuff--dec sat2 had no electrochemistry and one organic chem nomenclature problem

thanks guys!

so i've been doing PR for chem and bio...should i also get barrons then???

and i'm aiming for over a 700 as of now...obviously the higher, the better though...

I think Barron's for bio is good. I actually just studied a lot from my AP bio review books and my textbook, but I guess you don't really have that option.

every book has electrochem tho, cuz its frequently tested.

"dec sat 2 had...one organic chem nomenclature problem"

it did? >_>

yes, but will i be able to get over a 700 with only PR???
i'll definitely consider barrons if i have time...
