Chemistry and Computer Science dual major too hard?

Well the question is self-explanatory. I want to get a dual major in chemistry and computer science but some of some of my teachers have been telling me dual majors are too difficult, but I wanted to get a second opinion.

You need to consider how long it will take you and your finances. It is certainly possible to do a double major but usually it requires nearly an extra year of courses, possibly more, with the relatively different requirements of chemistry and computer science. If it takes you more than 4 years, it may not be worth it.

Hi vintagerain.

I just want to start out by saying you shouldn’t fear difficulty just because a teacher said so. Difficult is an opinion and if you truly believe that you can accomplish this double major. I’m sure you can and I’m here to fully support you.

I also saying this because I’m actually majoring in something similar. Currently, I’m an undergraduate double majoring in biochemistry and computer science, with a minor in chinese. It’s possible. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy. I’ve planned my next few years schedule already and I’ll be taking around 20 credits every semester (this is very high, since the limit is only around 19 for my college). Balancing schedules where its predominately science (and not particularly easy ones) is not an easy task.

I can keep you updated in my schedules if you like. Otherwise good luck!

I did something quite similar to this (ChemE and Computational Math). Finished easily enough in four years, but I had enough credits from HS to graduate a year early in either one major, and it was tough enough that I would say that it’s not for the average person. If you know what you’re getting into (you’ll need at least a year in university to be sure of this), and you think that you can manage 1.5x that workload consistently year-on-year, then it can be done regardless of what others say.

Xraymancs is right that it will take an extra year - for me, I just happened to be one year ahead anyhow.
