how strong is the chemistry department at Princeton and how does it compare to the other ives?

There's a new building for the chemistry department in the works as of now -- the university has really been working on chem department lately. I admit, however, that this was prompted by several professors' leaving the chem department after many years for their lack of confidence in the department's future. Chemistry is by no means shoddy at Princeton -- it just isn't what it was in its glory days.

However, the chemical engineering at Princeton is particularly good -- easily the best in the Ivy League. Since I'm pretty chem-obsessed myself, I'm a bit disappointed that the new chemistry building won't be finished for a while, but the renewed focus will hopefully bring new faculty in. I'm confident that Princeton can make a turnaround.

yea,i had the impression the chem department is not that strong.but thing is there are so many amazing things princeton have, the campus for one:) but after all the most important factors are academics and the ppl u meet (probably not that great coz of the relatively weak chem department) so i am not sure if i shud apply to princeton...

some background on the above:

In the end, it's totally your choice whether or not you want to apply to Princeton, but if you're suggesting that the academics and the people at Princeton are "probably not that great" because its chem department isn't as great as, for instance, the molbio department, you'll be missing out.

If you look on the Harvard board (and Harvard has a very good chem department), many would concede that Princeton is the place to go if you're looking for great academics, while Harvard is the place to go if you're looking for the great Boston/Cambridge city life. As for the people -- well, I may be biased, but Princeton people are quite obviously the greatest. :p

thanks for the links scottie and thanks for the useful info frozen-tears

I dunno about the chem dept., but lots of good chemistry, I've heard. :p

Orbit_J, what do u mean by "lots of good chemistry"?thanks for the response:)

I was referring to the "fluid exchange" or the "series of platonic activities" according to John Nash.

Sorry I was just being a smartie pants and not being helpful.
