Chemistry Course Selection

Can anyone tell me about the Chemistry Placement test used to determine course placement?

My D will be a freshman and might take a Chemistry course but is not leaning toward being a major at this point. She did score a 5 aon the AP Chem exam (SAT II 780) and we were wondering if very many students jump to Organic or whether most take the one semster general Chemistry course.

Thanks

No matter what your score on the AP (or SAT2) you need to take a placement test during orientation week in order to be able to take Ochem.

Being an old Econ. major I didn't take Chemistry in college. I always heard Organic is an insane course. It is better to not try to take that jump or is a common thing to do these days?

I think I heard of one person jumping to Orgo. But she is a Chem/Astro major and is brilliant in Chemistry. I would think about taking the jump, because college courses often give you a different outlook on the subject matter (having taken both Bio and Psych as APs and then again at Vassar). Bio was so much more enjoyable in college.

yeah, i think it is pretty rare for students to go right into Orgo. Most just take CHEM 125, the one semester accelerated general chemistry course.

Where did she find out her AP scores already? Thanks.

She took AP Chem as a Junior.

By the way, the AP scores for most exams have been available for $8 by phone since late last week. I was told that the AP Chem were not yet available but don't know that for sure.

I would recommend taking chem 125 first. I am a biochem major and took 125 and orgo my first year, and am taking the 2nd semester of orgo this fall. I am also pre-med though so I didn't want to jeopardize my chance at a good grade in orgo. Orgo is pretty hard, but if you stay on top of the material its not that bad.

Thanks that turned out to be her decision as well. Still mulling over Spanish. I expect orientation will clear up these sorts of questions.

By the way, does anyone take the night labs?
