My daughter, a NY resident, hopes to major in Chemistry (not pre med). We have visited both Johns Hopkins and SUNY at Stonybrook (and other schools). She found things to like about both schools, but is trying to decide if there is a reason to pick Johns Hopkins over SUNY at Stonybrook when taking into account the fact that it costs three times as much. She is interested in knowing the experience of undergrad Chemistry majors at Hopkins- do they like the program, profs? Do they get chances to do research with profs or TAs? Do they get an edge at admission in grad programs? Thanks for any help.

Hopkins is notorious for having a horrible undergraduate program. this is all word of mouth though.

I'm not in the chem department and I don't know too much about Stony Brook (although I do live on LI), but Hopkins has very strong departments in the sciences. You WILL get to do research and you will be very well prepared for grad/med school. But you have to decide if it's worth the cost difference.

I have lived on LI for over 10 yrs, and it is ridicioulus to compare the two. The reputation of JHU alone exceeds any reasoning to attend Stonybrook.

I don't think reputation should be enough to put one school over another...

can i ask what she ended up doing?
