Chemistry Major Stummped on Which Class To Take.

I'm gonna be a freshman this fall and planning on majoring in Chemistry.
I'm gonna be taking chem 142 and math 125. Kinda a no brainer i'd take those now. But i am currently unsure of what my third course should be. I kinda feel like the easy fig class or some other easy class like that is kinda a waste? Or would be it be benificial and be worth it to get the easy grade. But yeah what's your guys's input on what other kinda class to take?

Edit: math 124*

You could take one of the required intro English classes, or look into fulfilling other VLPA/I&S requirements.

oh yeah english would probably be my best bet. whats I&T?

I&S* is Individuals & Society and are classes like ECON 200.

Examples:
http://www.washington.edu/uaa/advising/downloads/issp11.pdf

woops i meant I&S. Okay i love political socience as well, and im like 99% sure ill get a 4 or 5 on the ap gov test soon so id get 5 credits there. Would another political science course like political theory or something count as something different so it doesnt overlap with the credit i get from ap gov? but still part of I&S?

I agree, go ahead and take a VLPA or an IandS just for whatever reasons you think make sense. I took C142 and M124 my freshman fall quarter as well and decided to take a VLPA in addition to those.

Also, a little protip since you’re planning on majoring: Chem 144 (advanced gen chem 1) is really easy to get into (all you have to do is ask, to be honest). It is not that much harder than 142 and if you’re a major it might be beneficial to your future. Just an idea.

yeah ive thought about taking that too. i thought for that you have to take a placement test dont you? but ive also heard that it really doesnt look that much different than normal chem and i heard it’s alot of extra work and theyd rather see a higher grade on c142 then a lower on on advanced?

Not at all. The labs are certainly more difficult than what you would do in 142, BUT, they are the same format as you will be doing in 152 andd 162 anyways so starting them early on will definitely prepare you better. The 144, 154, and 164 series has the exact same amount and types of labs as the -2 series, but with two additional ones at the end of the 164 series. There isn’t that much extra work- the only difference is the extended problem worksheet that is a supplement to the homework (everything else is the same). Although it is graded more harshly, the curve is actually higher than the -2 series- the University automatically bumps up whatever grade you get in a -4 class up 0.3 points on your grade report (so if you get a 3.2 you really get a 3.5 on your final report). Finally, you don’t even have to test in, all you have to do is ask permission from the undergraduate chem advising office (you may have to set up an appointment). Tell them you are majoring in chem and explain how important chem is to you. My friend just took basic chem in High School and she got in just by asking for a registration code (and I’m pretty sure she didn’t test in either). If you are serious about majoring in it then taking the slightly extra load sounds like a no-brainer to me. And if you don’t want to do more work in chem, then maybe its time you rethink your major.

Trust me on this, I’m not even a Chem major and I wish I took the opportunity when I had it. Just at the very least ask if you can get into the course. I would highly reccomend it.

Okay ill seriously consider it! Yeah no doubt I love chem and the extra work would be good but I heard it was almost a waste and did no good but thanks for the info!
