How notable is the chemistry program at JHU? Also, I heard that it is bad to go into chemistry and biology if you want to apply to med school. Is that true?

First of all, Chemistry at Johns Hopkins is phenomenal! It’s my second choice major after Biophysics so I’ve been looking into it. You can find all paths of chemistry at Hopkins and do research at the school of medicine (biophysical chemistry, biochemistry [school of public health], physical chemistry [Krieger?], theoretical chemistry, etc).

Thanks so much!

any comments regarding med?

Oh sorry, I forgot to reply to your second question :)

When people suggest that it’s a bad idea to do chemistry or biology as an undergrad before med schools, they usually base it on one of two things. 1st: It makes for a common med applicant (lots and lots of bio and chem majors apply to med school), and 2nd: The lower acceptance rate compared to say engineering of the arts.

The first notion can be true, unless of course you really do have a passion for chemistry and then not only are you prone to get a higher GPA, but you will thrive as a student doing what you love. I think Johns Hopkins Med released a statement saying that they wanted to see an undergrad pursue what they loved for four years, i.e. a commitment to a passion, whether that’s biology, or East Asian Studies, so it truly won’t hurt if you are doing what you love, because that’s what a lot of medicine is about.

The second notion is deceptive. The acceptance rates are generally lower because tons and tons of applicants in the bio and chem majors apply to med school, so naturally a fewer percentage is accepted, as opposed to hypothetically seventy of the hundred music majors who applied to med school in general.

So if chem is your passion, then you are at no disadvantage for majoring in it.

Hmm. that’s a good point. thanks for your perspicacious analysis : )

btw, are you a rising senior?

Yep :)

Hopefully a student at Hopkins next year :D

do you mind if i ask what your stats are and are you applying ed?

I am applying early decision and I will PM you my stats.
