Chemistry Olympiad 2014

If you actually read through the whole book, even Zumdahl is over-killing the local test…

Has anyone from the Los Angeles Section heard back if they made nationals? I took my test around 5 days ago and still haven’t heard anything :(

@phoenix55555 I used Central Science by Brown! I also used Atkins sometimes too just for reading and Central Science for problems.

@albert29: not gonna lie, when I read “Atkins,” I immediately thought of the diet.

What are some average cutoffs on MC for the top 150 on nationals? (since MC is the only thing counted, correct me if I’m mistaken)
for top 50? (MC + FR+ lab)

@albert29 , so do you think The central Science book prepared you extremely well (maybe even overdoing it) for the local exam ?

And are there any equations that we should have memorized thats not given in the data part of the locals exam?

When are LA kids supposed to be notified?

@phoenix55555 nah Central Science definitely did not overprepare. It’s pretty much just adequate AP-level material that is sufficient for local level but insufficient for nationals. I’d say atkin’s is overpreparing, but a good run through of Central science isn’t. But nothing beats doing past practice tests, so make sure to problem solve!

@linusballing I haven’t heard anything from the LA district yet… I’m patiently (or very anxiously) waiting for a phone call/email that seems to be not coming :(. I don’t think I missed anything on the local exam (checking with fellow classmates) but who knows, I may have made a few calculation mistakes that puts me under the probable 56-57 cutoff. btw nice name lol

@albert29 and @linusballing, did you guys take the test last year as well? how long did it take LA kids to get notified last year?

@persondontexist I didn’t pass last year but my friend who did recalls that it was “a week or two” after.
The best way to find out is to wait until testing block is over (31st) or to ask the local coordinator if you made it or not, I suppose. This wait is killing me though.

Well I didn’t get a call, but my teacher was notified. 56 makes it, but I have no idea what the cutoff actually is. I mean for LA.

lol our section just grades everything and announces the day we took the local exam.

It’s been a pretty rough week since I last visited this thread (declined by 2 research programs).

@TeamRocketGrunt, Any zumdahl edition is fine… I’m using 8th edition.

 1. There’s an ACS banquet??? free food   :D

What is the High Honors cutoff? (I’ve been scoring from 48 to 54’s on the national MC)

I did not finish the Klein’s Orgo book this spring break as I promised (it’s not necessary due to superfluous info like hydroboration, biochemistry, etc)

BTW, you typically receive notifications about your local tests results thru teacher’s email (for my region)
2 weeks of waiting is pretty ridiculous; email the coordinator or something

Hey guys, I took the exam today at a school I dont attend… the teacher who was proctoring told us to indicate yes if we are us cirizens or no if we arent because only us citizens will be able to take the national exam. So I put “no” because im not a us citizen. And then, I checked the ACS website and it says that us national exam is open to both us citizens and permanent residents, which I am… I think I did really well (scoring around 53); should I email ACS section coordinator about this? What do you guys think?

@TheAnomalist: I’m considering using Zumdahl, 6th ed. with an orgo MCAT prep book to prepare. Think that’ll be good enough?

@linusballing i think i heard that a 54 or 55 will qualify for LA this year… not entirely confirmed though. last year, 56 was a guaranteed confirmed. Two people who scored 55 had to face off in a tiebreaker test to get to the next round

Not true. Last year, a few kids who scored 56 had to face off in a tiebreaker. But yeah, this year 56 qualifies for sure, so the cutoff is probably a few below that.

@linusballing: hang on, 56 out of what? (Never taken the test; just stalking this thread for tips for next year). Also, love the username.

Hey guys, pretty happy! I qualified to Nationals… Any info on how it is like - experience?
BTW I am in the DFW region
