Hey this is my first year that I am eligible to compete in the Chem Olympiad. I am just wondering that if I was to compete how much time would I want to put into studying. Is just taking a first-year Chemistry course enough information for the exam (using the Brown and LeMay book)? Do you guys have any specific tips if you have done the exam before?

From what I hear, it’s a lot of studying. You really have to know your Chemistry.

There is already a thread for the 2013 chemistry Olympiad. Nevertheless, I will give you a quick run down on the level of skill needed:
Local Level: 1st year college chemistry should be enough
National Exam: 1st year college chemistry + 1st year Organic Chemistry
Team Selection test: Heavy on the Organic Chemistry
International Level: Wide range of difficulty from Organic Chem to College level thermodynamics.

Hope this helps, however AP Chemistry should be enough to take you past the local level. If you want to make it further, then serious self-study is needed.

@TheGreatCatsbyx P.S. Do you go to Lexington H.S. in Boston?
