Hi.......I wanna give the Chem Placement Test but since I've done high school abroad I really dont know what or how much to study and what the level of the test is gonna be like.
->I couldnt find them the the web but if anybody knows any mock tests or sample questions could you please give me the website.
->Also could any of the people who've already given the test, please tell me some of the question so I may get an idea about the level of the test.
->If anybody would be good enough to list all the topics I should go through before the test,it would be really appreciated.

i didn't take the test but i am guessing that the test will place you in chem classes of different difficulty -- in this case look over the course description for those classes and study for those topics -- because if you know these topics, you don't need to take the class, and that is what the test will be checking for

for chem 4 it says "Topics include nomenclature, stoichiometry, and the periodic table." -- so i am guessing you have to know things mentioned above (like balancing reactions and knowing where your sodium atom is in periodic table and how many electrons it has in its orbitals) -- i.e. this is your basic high school first-year chem class, and it does not matter where you took it because basic chemistry is same everywhere

if you take AP chem test and pass with certain score, they let you skip chem 6A-C -- this means that chem 6A-C is like US high school AP chem class, same sort of material, or second year of basic chemistry at any high school

I semi-took it, as I mentioned before, it wouldnt let me send it in. The first 8 questions are just math. there is one question you must balance the equation. you have to know the name of a substance by looking at its symbols for example h2o is water. Its not that easy but its not really that hard at all. The only thing I dont know how to do is when there were questions about how much you need to do something about numbers and volume. It might be called titration. i dont know. Anything with numbers I just skipped (and there were only like 3/31).I havent taken chemistry in such a long time.
The main page of the placement exam has sample questions on it...
https://www-chem.ucsd.edu/Academic/placement/index.html

It really was a lot easier than I expected though, so if you know chemistry I wouldnt be worried about this at all...I don't know a lot and I'm pretty sure I knew most of them.

YESSS!!! I just took it..and they let me submit it this time :0!!
My recommended class is Chem 6A woooo!!! I was so scared I was going to have to go back to basic chem. ;(

do we have to go by the recommended classes they give us? i took hs chem (chem honors) but not AP, so does that automatically place me in chem6a? i really do not want to take the chem placement test since i took chem soph yr and prob forgot evyerthing.

hoboknifefight: where did u take the exam and do u have dates?

And I promise, it's not so bad. I was sooo scared at first because I figured I had forgotten everything that I learned in AP chem (not that I learned that much in the first place). If I can get placed into Chem 6A, you have to seriously know NOTHING about chemistry to not get into it.
Which, obviously, it would be better to go into basic chemistry then, anyway.

And as far as I know, the classes you took in high school do not get you out of taking the placement test...maybe I am wrong. I took AP chem. I took the test.

hoboknifefight: did u study for the exam? and would you know what are the various types of chemistry courses u could be placed in besides chem6A?

I did not study whatsoever, I did the sample questions on the first page, and since they were all so easy, I figured the test wouldn't be so bad. They can recommend Basic Chemistry (Chem4), General Chemistry (Chem 6A) and Honors Chemistry (Chem 6AH)..Thank gosh they didnt put me in that one :

Im probably gonna get into basic chem, cuz i thought the sample questions were kinda hard. i hardly remember anything from soph year honors chem.

if i got into chem6AH...is there any way i can just take chem 6A? besides, it says i have concurrently enroll in math 20a and i plan on taking only the 10 series since i'm not going into engineering/physics.

Do you have to take the test in order to enroll in Chem. 6A?
I know that the Prerequisite for Chem. 6A is you have to register in Math 10 series or 20 series but I don't know if I'm required to take the placement exam?
Thank you for your help in advance !!!!

I really don't know anything about this. However, I think you should just take it so that you know where you are in chemistry. I mean, taking the test only "recommends" what class you should go in, not actually puts you in it. So if you do more poorly on then you think you should've, you could probably still go into the class you want anyway.
Good luck!.

How do the actual test questions compare the the sample ones?
So, if I take the placment now, but don't do chemistry first quarter, do I have to re-take the placment test for when I actually take chemisty?

I think the sample questions go with the actual questions pretty well. Some of the questions are exactly like that but with different words or numbers or whatever. Like I said earlier, the first 8 questions are just math, I was very suprised. I thought they were very easy, but math is my thing. There were also some questions about volume and moles and grams and converting and stuff, though those were the things i couldn't remember how to do at all. The last question was a this thing where you had to match the sentence to the correct graph. Like, decreasing linearly from here to here, increasing linearly from here to here. which graph matches that the best. Seemed easy, though I have no idea if I got it right.

If you take it now, I doubt you'd have to re-take it. That would be weird.
