Chemistry Placement

Ok so i am really confused at the moment about the chemistry placement test and need some help. i got a 3 on the ap chem test, and well that was in my sophmore year, so i have forgotten most of what i learned. Other than that, i was looking on caesar for the class i would be placed into b/c of my score which is Chem 171, and it is only scheduled for the same time as my fresh seminar. so does anyone know if i would have to take 171 or could i take 101? on the intro for the chem placement test it says "In no case will you be allowed to earn credit twice for the same course. For instance, if you are awarded credit through the AP test for Chemistry 101, you may not take that course for credit after matriculation." under the heading "Must i accept the Departments Placement?" which leaves me feeling i HAVE to take 171...

If you get credit for a course through APs/IBs and then take that course, you forego the test credit. I.E. if you get credit for chem 101 and then take 101 you only get one course credit.

The operative part of NU’s description is “for credit” not “may not take”.

I think what that is essentially saying is, is that while you haven’t received credit to place out of chem, they are going to put you into the higher level class for having already taken AP Chem.

I have heard good and bad things about that class, you get to finish the entire general chem sequence within 2 quarters as opposed to 3. But this of course means alot more work. Up to you!

i was wondering about this too! Do i have to take the placement test even though I got a 3 and FOR SURE, want to take chem 101 not 171??

ya i was fine with 171 until i looked up the times/days of the class on cesaer and there is only one class open that overlaps my freshmen seminar, so either i switch seminars (only ones i have no interest in whatsoever are still available) or i take 101.
But to gg1833- i think you still do have to take the placement test.
In an email sent out about the test they said “There seems to be some confusion about who needs to take the chemistry placement exam. Not all students will take chemistry, so if you are not planning to register for chemistry you do not need to take the chemistry placement exam. However, if you are planning to register for Chem 101 for fall quarter you must take the chemistry placement exam regardless of the amount of high school chemistry you did or did not take.”
So i believe that since we want to register for 101 we have to take the test
