I won't be nearly far enough into AP Chem by October for it to really help me out... so what books / guides should I be using if I'm aiming for an 800?

Hmm, well, assuming that you were in a pretty rigorous honors chem course, use Kaplan or Barron's (preferably Barron's because uh, Kaplan has too many typos as I'm studying it... Grr.) to take the practice tests, look over the material and overprepare yourself. Then definitely take all of Princeton Review tests because they are close to the SAT II Chem test.

Make sure you know the format of the test. It's kind of confusing, the TTCE section. Ahh.

So basically, just do as many practice tests as you can and you'll get used to the test.

Good luck on your Chem SAT II. I'll be taking it, too, without having taken an AP Chemistry course. (A lot of my friends who were in my class took it and did well.) Study hard and you'll be rewarded.

After barron's and kaplan tests, it's not hard at all. I took it in June, and my chemistry course was also non-AP, and I ended up wih a 790.

Nice. How much studying did you do Blood?

Yeah, to study for the SAT essentially what I did was just practice a LOT.

I don't really like Kaplan that much, I found too many errors in their other books. But considering I need as much prep as possible I may well use one.

Lol, I did not even start studying regularly until mid-late may. Then I did Barron's every night, got mcgraw hill, PR, kaplan practice tests, checked everything I got wrong, got the sparknotes memorization stuff down, and got my 790 lol

Well I've got until october... hmm. I think I'll do Barrons (for overstudy and the 8orso tests) and PR for the fact that it's more true to the test. I'm rusty on chem (it's been 2 years now) but I learn fast... so it shouldn't be too hard :P

Thanks for the advice!

Where can you find a lot of practice tests because my kaplan book only has like 2?

mcgraw hill, barron's and sparknotes.

Sparknotes tests dont tell anything. Here are my sparknotes scores:

650
590
640

Sparknotes.com should have 3...

and consider buying barrons...

its very realistic to do well on SAT II: Chem without doing AP Chem.. the SAT II doesnt cover as much chemistry as the AP and IB exams do.. It is also not very lab intensive..

get a good prep book, Barrons or Princeton Review and you'll do well.. People have done it at my school before..

Don't worry about completing the AP course. I took my school's standard chemistry course and ended up with a 740...and science is by far my weakest subject.

I used Princeton Review. On my first practice test, I got a 560. You do the math. :)

Thanks!
I'm going to purchase Barrons Chemistry SATII and PR Chem SATII.

Since I don't want to start a new thread, is Barron's good enough for SAT2 Math2c? I've taken AP Calc and AP Stat and gotten 5s on both but I know there really isn't much of either on the test AND I'm quite rusty in precalc (it's been a while)

O and remember "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate!"

LOL

Never heard that, but it's "cute" and makes sense.

self studied using PR (2003-2004)and Barrons(2002) (both super old versions lol) got an 800 (took it in June)
but I used the PR version 2004-2005 for AP Chem in May and got a 5,
so I guess preparing for the AP helped quite a bit. (all by self study)

do as many practice tests as you can. I did it from Barron's, Princeton Review, McGraw Hill, Sparknotes (don't expect high scores). I got an 800.
