I've been looking at schools for Chemistry and I was wondering if either University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign or University of Wisconsin-Madison are significantly "better" in chemistry/philosophy than UNC-CH. Also, how would LACs compare to UNC in those fields?

Thanks =)

Both are great, but UNC is too. You might look at the University of Minnesota; they also have a good chemistry department and the OOS tuition is cheap.

Is NCSU much different from UNC? I’ve never seen NCSU appear on any rankings for chem. UNC is instate for me, so it would be my top school unless I was going to somewhere significantly better. :/

^ NCSU has a good engineering program, while UNC has none at all. UNC is more selective.

UNC is an easy recommendation for you so long as you don’t need engineering programs.

Both are slightly better than Carolina in chemistry, but all three have top 15 programs, so you would not notice any difference whatsoever in quality.

Carolina is stronger than both in philosophy.

State has a pretty good chemistry program, and in-state it’s a bargain.

The atmosphere at State is where it differs from UNC. The campus is much uglier, and the student body is generally more conservative. It’s a great school, though.

Disregarding ranking altogether, I feel like UNC is a theoretical/liberal arts type school while NCSU is a down-to-Earth/technical school. I’m not sure which group I’d fit in with better. I guess I’ll just have to visit for myself.
