Chemistry Textbooks

I am taking Chemistry this fall and am in the process of buying my textbooks and now I have a question. Would one be able to get by in Halpin's Chemistry course using the International Student Edition of the 5th edition or using the 4th Edition of the American Edition of Silberberg's Chemistry? Does the professor assign questions directly from the textbook for homework or is there some other factor that would make it best to buy the new 5th edition of the American book? Thanks in advance!

How do you know which books to get already?

the textbooks are all the same. the differences are the questions they have at the end of the chapters. Halpin’s class is more about attending recitation and reading his written lectures than studying the textbook. His exams are very math oriented. If you do enough practice problems and go to recitation, you will do well.

the questions are from textbook but you can borrow the book from a friend or get it from the reserves at bobst

Abe,
Go to [New York University > NYU Bookstores](http://www.bookstores.nyu.edu/)

I’m also debating between the International 5th edition and US 5th edition - either I buy the (US Edition + Aris card + Lecture Notes) together for $232 from NYU, or I get the (Aris Card/Notes) together for $88 and buy the book separately. Buying the book separately isn’t worth it for the US edition, but the International editions are really cheap. I’m not sure if I should get it since it will have different questions…I live off campus and have a job so borrowing the book is harder for me since I’m not usually at NYU…so should I just get the US Edition?

Also, for Chem we need a Lab Manual - is the 2008 version ok or should I get the 09?

damn, i am not liking my list of textbooks hahahahaa

In my opinion, you should just get the textbook that NYU tells you to get. Esp for intro science courses, where you’ll have 4, 5, 6 hundred other students in your class, you’ll need all the help you can get to keep up with the work- having the right textbook is a part of that. You can get by with an older or slightly different edition, but you’re going to have to keep checking that you’re not doing the wrong problems and answering the wrong questions. If you’re anything like me, it’ll make you slightly paranoid.

Lab manuals tend to change every year, since they’re made specifically for NYU labs, so its best to get this year’s edition. Also, for gen chem students, make sure to go to lab lecture! It sucks to get up at 8 in the morning, but last year, everyone skipped class so much that the professor got really annoyed and intentionally gave the people present in class a different assignment than the one in the book, and the people who didn’t have the right assignment with them couldn’t get into the lab that week.

And yes… unfortunately you will go broke after buying science textbooks.
