<p>Chess Life magazine has an article this month on Chess Scholarships (page 20 of the January 2007 issue). Here are some of those mentioned (and the associated websites for applications or information):</p>
<p>University of Texas at Dallas (UTD): awards a four-year, full-tuition-and fees scholarship to the top 11th grade-and-below finisher at the Denker Tournament of High School Champions. Additionally they offer academic schlarships to qualifed chess-player scholars. To qualify for these you have to play chess, but also meet the Texas entrance requirements (average SAT score of 1245). <p>University of Maryland at Baltimore County(UMBC): awards a four-year scholarship (tuition, room and board) valued at over $66,000 for an out-of-state student. Criteria for the award is that the student does well at the U.S. Cadet Chess Championship. They also award a "Special Merit for Chess" award (value up to $10,000 per year) and a "Tournament-based" award (up to 4-year full tuition award). <p>University of Connecticut: The UConn school of engineering will sponsor a $14,000 scholarship tournament in October 2007. The top 3 finishers will receive $2,000; $1,000; and $500 for 4 years in renewable annual scholarships. Students must be able to meet the schools entrance requirements and maintain a 3.4 GPA to renew each year. <p>Florida Atlantic University offers a $500 scholarship for winners of the Florida Scholastic Chess Tournament. For more info on this contact Ms. Dianne Reeves at <a href="mailto:dreeves@fau.edu">dreeves@fau.edu</a> and ask about the Julius Hallgarten Endowment</p>

<p>Texas A&M University at Kingsville offers a housing scholarship valued at $7,500 per year (don't know the website)</p>
<p>University of Texas at Brownsville offers President's Chess Scholarships that cover tuition and fees, and may also include housing, meals, and books depending upon the qualifications of the student. <p>Southwest Texas State University offers a San Marcos Optimist International Scholarship valued at $1,000 (no website listed)</p>
<p>Del Mar College President's Chess Scholarship offers a two-year scholarship to include tuition, books, and fees with a value of over $4,000 for a student coming from within the local five-county area. (also don't have the website)</p>
