Classics :] then law school, hopefully

This is a trick question, right? Your question "favorite book?" seems to imply that you are asking for only one. And it's just not possible for me to tell you only one. Though here's a brief list of some of my favorite books/authors, and I'm not being facetious when I say "brief": Mark Twain, Kate Chopin, Charles Dickens, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Oscar Wilde, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, House of Leaves, Grendel, Johnny Got His Gun, Origin of Species, The Crucible, and of course Harry Potter =)

10! I'm a nerd and proud of it :D

Franesca Lia Block's books (she writes along the lines of chick lit; she wrote the Weetzie Bat series if you've heard of that)

Alternative rock/Indie. Aren't I so original?

Writing two 8-page papers (about the historical, social, and anthropological events and their effects of the theory of evolution and how it changed with time...I was taking a summer college course on evolution at Cornell) in 18 hours with little to no preparation beforehand, and eating, showering, and even napping a little in those 18 hours, and still getting an A on both papers.

Getting a B (I was .4 points from getting an A) in Honors World Lit for 1st quarter of senior year :( It's going to show up on my early apps!!!

#2, but only because they don't do ED. It would be tied with Columbia for #1 if it did have ED, though I'd have significant trouble deciding where to apply...though that's irrelevant.

I think I definitely win "Longest and Most Rambling Post" for this thread. Because I'm trying to distract myself from panicking about the fiasco that was my Common Application. Please read my thread and reply if you can! It should still be at the top of the Chicago forum...

1.) Egyptologist
2.) English, anthropology, linguistics, astrophysics
3.) Poisonwood Bible, Heart of Darkness, Vlad Taltos series by Steven Brust, good fantasy in general.
4.) 7-8
5.) Video games and fanfiction.
6.) Anything but American rap. (French rap is nice.) :)
7.) Taking up writing - best decision I've made in my life.
8.) Writing - Let's just say I'm not that great of a writer...
9.) #1 for sure.

So I'm seeing a lot of Indie/Alternative/Rock as favorite music. What are some of your favorite bands?

I'll start (mostly copied+pasted from my facebook profile because I'm lazy): Muse, Cake, The Killers, The Postal Service, Mika, Beck, Arcade Fire, The Ramones, Green Day, Weezer, Lostprophets, Sufjan Stevens, The Dandy Warhols, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Beatles, Kansas, The Raconteurs, Snow Patrol, Death Cab For Cutie, Josh Ritter, Rolling Stones, The Shins, Moments in Grace, The Cure, Tears For Fears, Goo Goo Dolls, Keane, Snow Patrol, Karnivool, Regina Spektor, Imogen Heap, Bright Eyes
Two of my favorite soundtracks: Juno and Dr. Horrible's Song-Along Blog

Your turn!

Spazzity.... based on our music tastes, I think that we should date =P

I know it wasn't on your list, though, but I went to a Coldplay concert last week. It basically changed my life.

^ I am burning with jealousy.
and spazzity-- omg! Dr. Horrible!!!!

as far as music tastes go, I'll just list my essentials: THE BEATLES, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, The Fratellis, Arcade Fire, Weezer, Coldplay, The Libertines, Keane, Regina Spektor, Snow Patrol, Muse, The Raconteurs, Air Traffic, The Kooks, We Are Scientists, The Futureheads, House of Heroes, The Maccabees, Ok Go, Radiohead, The Strokes, The Who, CCR, Bloc Party, Vampire Weekend, and Kate Nash

Looks like we're going on a three-way date.

I do love a good threesome now and then.
:D

This may not be too welcome on this forum, but I love Vampire Weekend as well, and I think it's so cool that the band originated in Columbia, my ED (Please don't stone me!).

And yes, Coldplay is amazing.
As is Dr. Horrible (I've memorized pretty much all the lyrics to the entire soundtrack).
But Muse is better than everything else put together :P

Muse is basically the best band out there. I would listen to them nonstop if i hadn't already done that for about a year on end. They need a new album for sure.

And a new band i discovered - Fleet Foxes. Amazing too.

Oxford comma.

I wonder how representative of Chicago's student body our musical tastes are? I never would have thought I'd be having this type of conversation, online, with a group of prospective Chicago students. But the internet is awesome like that.

And I agree, Fastfood15, Muse really needs to put out another album. SOON. Haha the first time I discovered Muse, I think I listened to nothing but Muse for about 2 months.

goes off to find Fleet Foxes music

I love my Oxford commas.
And the song as well. :]
