Chicago '09ers: let's get to know each other!

Well I like folk music too. lol almost opposite of muse, but whatever. You may not like Fleet foxes.

got some crazy cool people here... maybe even some future robert millikans HINT HINT CLASSIC MAJORS

Harvey Danger, anyone?

And I do like some folk now and then, I listen to a pretty wide range of stuff. I mean I love Josh Ritter, and he's pretty folksy. <--Is that even a word? Did I spell it right?

Edit I'm listening to Fleet Foxes right now, and I kind of love them =]

Classics major over here!! Though I'm confused as to what that has to do with Robert Millikan, wasn't he a Nobel laureate in Physics or Chemistry? Not very related to the Classics?

he studied classics as his major and got a BA in classics at oberlin... his greek linguistics prof gave him a physics book and asked him to learn it and help teach his first year physics class just because he was pro at classics.

^That is kind of awesome. Who says Classics isn't a useful major? We excel at pretty much everything!

Though I'm using the term "we" rather prematurely here. :/

haha... well it is a relatively hard thinking course.. u develop an abstract mind that allows for u to master subjects much faster... Philosophy though is a great way to do that... classics is a sub division of philosophy just like everything else in the hierarchy of academic disciplines.

But one can do very well in Philosophy with simply the help of some chemically mind-altering substances. Said substances will be of detriment to the field of Classics.

:P

Oh, silly me, I totally forgot the obvious.

Sufjan Stevens fans around here? Anyone? Anyone?
I listened to "Chicago" on repeat while writing my Chicago essays. I'm so original.

It makes me so happy that you're all so interesting.=D

Really, money is more or less irrelavant to me. I don't expect to ever have dependents and can be content on rather modest means. So my dream job is the one I'm pursuing. I want to be a writer.

English, but I'd like to double major with a science

The Brothers Karamazov

Probably around 7. I like to think I'm fairly normal, but then just last week, while I was going to sleep, I realized that I called Ratikin a Faustian character on my AP Lit essay last May when he is actually a Mephistopheles. And I was embarrassed.

I watch House.

Okay, I admit to being odd here. I really like opera. I love the music and can't understand the words, so the bad poetry doesn't bother me like it does in most rock music.

Can't say I've accomplished much. I have a hard time pointing to anything in particular. I guess that's rather sad.

I was a swimmer for about ten years before my sophomore swim season beat me down to the point that just standing on the pool deck set me on the edge of tears. So I quit, and lost a lot of friends and a fair portion of my social identity. It was the right thing for me to do, but I wish it hadn't had to end like that.

Chicago is my first choice, but even if I get in, I can't go unless I get a huge scholarship from some quarter or another.

mostly electronic music and progressive metal; my favorite artists/bands are Autechre, BT, Chopin, Opeth, Radiohead, and Shpongle. see: Backslash0's Music Profile - Users at Last.fm

became a USABO semifinalist and qualified for AIME without any prior preparation freshman and sophomore year, respectively; mostly overcoming shyness and low self-confidence (still working on it though)

not putting any effort into USABO or AIME the following years and thus not improving at all; missing many opportunities for self-improvement because of a lack of initiative or (ironically) fear of failure

tied for first with one other

Either something related to the UN or possibly NGO work. I love politics but not the “gamey” kind. My contingency plan is to become a Freelance Paint Name Creator… Panther Shadow—A jet black blend with slight purple undertones. It just comes naturally, Behr here I come!

International Studies, Race/Ethnic Studies (?)

Invisible Monsters (Chuck Palahniuk is amazing)

4, I don't think I would really call myself a "nerd" as much as incredibly witty and non sequitur-ial. Just straight up random.

Sour Patch Kids, Election Returns and TEA—OMG I LOVE TEA! Reading “Overheard at…” groups on Facebook, impromptu dance parties and Haight Street in San Francisco… These are a few of my favorite things.

This is so hard... I want to say Hip Hop (Not the trashy American mainstream stuff, but independent and socially conscious hip hop) but then it is all over the place. Looking at my Top 25 in iTunes: Atmosphere, Common Market, The Fugees, The Streets, Shwayze (what can I say I am from California), Basshunter, Britney Spears (YIKES?!!?!), Cold Play, The Raconteurs, Jedi Mind Tricks, RJD2, The Cool Kids, BEN HARPER (love!), Bob Marley, Cobra Starship… It goes on.

I don’t really have one. Maybe Telluride but even then I don’t know if I would call that an accomplishment as much as luck. I guess my family not that it is really an “accomplishment.” We are just sooo *Jolie-Pitt/i with my Chinese sister, me being Black and the rest of my family being white. Our Christmas cards always turn heads and I love it!

Getting fired by Jamba Juice for quote: “not caring about the FIBER platform at the center of the Jamba experience and valuing your college applications over working a regular or substantial number of hours” (I took 3 weeks off, one while I was in Chicago and then 2 to do my app!)

No. 1, I don’t even know my No. 2 after Chicago and I need to report all of the schools I am applying to by Wednesday, any suggestions…

You all seem like AMAZING people! Thanks for giving me another outlet of procrastination, grrr.

Edmandoo... I have been looking for some good electro artists, I will definitely have to check the few you listed.

EDIT: I write way tooooo much!

<3 Elliot Smith

Chadsu, you just listed most of the indie bands missing from my list of favorite bands! Mountain Goats are awesome, as is Broken Social Scene and Spoon!!

However, it really disturbs me that you love Radiohead, yet do not have Muse on your list of favorite bands. I don't know if we can be friends after this....

Mad love to those who mentioned Dr. Horrible. (fun fact: I SMed a play last weekend, and before call we were blasting it on the sound system.)

Renegade political activist who, in her spare time, studies archaeology and astronomy and translates Norse epic poetry. (well, that's if practicality were as irrelevant as money)

double major in physics and philosophy

That's such a hard question... pretty much anything by Tolkien I guess. Roverandom is especially cute, though I love LotR and The Silmarillion is like a bible. Hmm.

um. 11?

ABBA

I like a lot of different genres, really. Metal, rock/classic rock, alternative, some folk, electronic, some (mostly older) pop, showtunes... basically anything except rap and country and most new pop.

I won the Bartimaeus Fantasy Writing Contest. As part of the prize, the character I created appears in the last book of the trilogy (The Bartimaeus Trilogy, by Jonathan Stroud).

One day I tried to use my calculator to finish a physics problem, but the batteries died. I didn't have any spares, so I opened the battery panel and took them out and flipped them all around so that I could try to trick it into working. I finally got it turned on, looked down at the problem, and realized the only step I had left was to divide by 1.

It's not my top-top choice at the moment, but it's really high up there. I don't have number ratings for preference really; the comparison I use to explain my preference to people is a sealed off room full of gases. The gases have different densities, but they're only different enough to rise to different heights, not to not mix together quite a bit with those around them. The less dense a gas/school is, the high it is. Suffice to say that Chicago's not very dense.

elenduiel, you are officially my hero. Can we get married? :P

So, out of curiosity, who's doing NaNoWriMo this year?

what is your:
1. dream career, if money were irrelevant?
2. intended major/academic interests?
3. favorite book?
4. nerdiness on a scale of 1-10?
5. guilty pleasure?
6. favorite music genre?
7. greatest accomplishment?
8. greatest failure?
and 9. how high is chicago ranked on your list? be honest.

Underground Hip-Hop artist for a crew in South Korea by the name of Soul Company. I wish to merge another underground crew in Chicago by the name of Molemen, and merge hip hop as one big family of unheard poets. Oh also, I want to create a coffee shop made of coffee beans and play for Manchester United in England.

Playing with action figurers and being a food monster even at the most "proper" places.

Jazzy sport hip-hop, disney soundtracks, dreamy tracks, soft rock, French pop, electronica, dance, house, a Cappella stuff

I'm the type of person who'd celebrate like I became the next president when getting a question right. It's not to brag, it's just a natural reaction (with a smile :D). I'd rather be happy over the questions I got right rather than mourn over the ones I got wrong. I guess every positive aspect in my life has been my greatest accomplishment.
