Essays: eh. could do better, I think, but other people said it was good. I wrote about my bedroom because all the prompts were dumb. my short answers were good.

Sent in sample of creative writing, 38-page paper I wrote on Latin American political instability, CD of photography.

-Puerto Rican female from Ohio.

I would say guess at UChicago's weighting system like so:

Secondary School Transcript: 35%
Standardized Test Scores: 25%
Essays: 25%
Extracurriculars: 15%
How Much You'll Cry if You're Rejected: 0%

Oh yeah. National Merit semifinalist. I put that I'm interested in International Affairs or Latin American Studies.

Essay-? I did the one about language

dot_commie ~ If you thought the prompts were dumb, what do you like about Chicago?

Oh, and for dot_commie, why the hell are you sending them a 38-page research paper?

I sent them a newspaper clipping of mine (stupidly, I forgot to date it OR identify the newspaper!!!)--but it's 650 words, not 12,000.

Do you even think they'll read more than two pages?

Naw. Not for a second do I think they'll read it. It's just something I care a lot about and am proud of and thought it would be a visual representation of it.

Also, quick lesson here...essay prompts <> entire school. I like the location, intellectual philosophy, things I've heard from friends/alumni, resources, programs offered, attitude, etc. I just didn't think their essays gave me a chance to accurately portray myself.

Recommendations: Mostly stellar. My English teacher read her letter to her husband and he said that it made me sound like I walked on water. This is a plus. My math teacher probably wrote a good letter too, based on what he's said about me before. I sent a supplemental letter from a faculty advisor that was supposed to have been good, too. My counsellor is braindead, so I worry about his letter.

Essays: I've never been satisfied with anything I've ever written. That said, I was incredibly happy with my essay. I called it "Mustard Manifesto," and it was about how giant mustard relates to Marxism.

Interveiw: I was happy with it. We chatted about my politics, my life, being gay at my school, etc. etc. I think I made a good impression. But, as my Swarthmore rejection letter taught me today, I'm not very good at judging my impressions.

Yup. This is definitely a "reach" school. I just hope and pray that my essay helps to tip the balance, because I was REALLY happy with it. My AP English teacher, who used to work in the graduate admissions office at UVA, said it was the "smartest, funniest, best essay" she had ever read, or something to that effect.

Good luck to everyone!

danielsh: "My AP English teacher, who used to work in the graduate admissions office at UVA, said it was the 'smartest, funniest, best essay' she had ever read, or something to that effect."

Sorry, but no.

Brine: Pardon? I'm not trying to be an ******* or anything, I was just sharing what I thought was one of a very few "plusses" on my app. Sorry if it seemed obnoxious.

eeek. my stats look like i'm a remedial student compared to everyone else's:
SAT I: 1400, II's: 740,740,740
GPA:3.7
Good recs, ok essay, and a really good supplementary essay, really good EC's
Applied EA as a linguistics major, and i'm from california

daniel:

are you the one with the website and the picture of Virginio Ferraris sculpture Dialogo.

Heh, yeah, that's me. Small Internet, I suppose. I need to come up with some more creative aliases.

ya, I was looking for that picture. UChicago website didn't help much. So, did a google search and paw! there it was...big and bright...Dialogo! on your webpage.

I love that sculpture dearly. It's rather comforting to think that the mere shadow of a hammer and sickle drove away a departmentful of economists. A specter is haunting the University of Chicago...

applied EA

I love Chicago. The city and the school. And you people are wonderful. I wish you absolutely the VERY BEST of luck in your application to such an amazing school - EA and RD.
