Chicago ,NYU, Northwestern, Cal, UCLA, UCSD

I am looking forward to major in economy in one of the following colleges (hopefully):

Chicago
Northwestern
NYU
Cal
UCSD
UCLA
UCI
UCSB
UCD
UCR
UCM
UCSC

I am a cali resident who has arrived in US at the middle of my freshman year.

New SAT 1 : 2340 (800m 800v 740w)
Combined: 2380
SAT 2 : Chinese 800 USH 750-800

GPA: 2.7-2.9 (no AP, school offers though) (can't bare to do any HW in school, will try to explain in essay)

EC:

Outstanding/distinguished speaker in junior debate
Assistant in dad's company
Assistant in SAT prep class

i don't think the ECs are that great, and don't really stand out.

GPA: 2.7-2.9 (no AP, school offers though) (can't bare to do any HW in school, will try to explain in essay)

that will not help. saying 'i can't bear to do homework' makes you look like a slacker, which, no offense, but you sound like. these schools look for people who are not only smart, but also hardworking. they will take hardworking over smart. The GPA kills you, even with your nice SATs...(btw, the SAT II Chinese doesn't help you at all. it just contributes, one again, to the slacker image)...especially for the UCs...for all the schools. Cal, which is terribly GPA focused, is not possible. They weight GPA way over SAT.

they might've excused you b/c of immigrant status, but with 800 verbal, that goes out the door.

With this GPA and the image you present, I have a lot of difficulty placing you anywhere short of UCR or UCM, and even those, I'm iffy about.

High Reach:
Chicago (they make a huge deal about 'loving learning for learning' and participating in class and such - i.e. not slacking off)
Northwestern
NYU
USC
Cal (GPA oriented)
UCLA (EC oriented)

Middle Reach:
UCSD (once again, GPA really hurts you here)
UCD

Small Reach:
UCI
UCSB

Match-Reach: (depends on everything else, like recs...which I don't think will be that great, looking at GPA, and essay, which can be good and make up for it)
UCR
UCM

I really hate how colleges look down on slackers like this. Some people mature later than others and thus find themselves shut out from any chances at all except two years in a CC.
I mean, can't they ever take a gamble and take in smart buy lazy people who WILL study in college?

Well I was put in an independent school for the second semester of 9th grade so I can make an excuse there saying I barely knew any english? X_X

in a word: no

but i think that you could get into UCSB or UCSD
if you write bang up essays and improve your gpa a little

I am done with junior year, how can I improve GPA?

well, that gpa's really low. your UC gpa is probably going to be a bit lower. why can't you bear to do homework in class?

i think you can get into UCR. if you really do feel you can improve your work habits and you can't stand to go to UCR or UCM, then you can go to a community college and transfer later. get all As there.

Thats my UC GPA. UC and non-UC about same. Might be 3.0

well, go and apply. it wouldn't hurt. not like you can really change your gpa anyway. you can listen to these people here and not apply because you think you have no chance. or you can try it out and see what happens. i think you would want to at least apply.

Will definately apply. I mean all I lose will be the admission fees but its like lotto..lawl

Just want to see how ppl think so I know what to expect when those letetrs come..

well, why can't you do homework in class. i'm still curious about what you meant by that

I really hate how colleges look down on slackers like this. Some people mature later than others and thus find themselves shut out from any chances at all except two years in a CC.
I mean, can't they ever take a gamble and take in smart buy lazy people who WILL study in college?

why wouldn't they rather take a gamble on a not-as-smart but hardworking student who maybe WILL succeed, not only study (which they definitely will do), in college?

Its something you work for. I really hate people that think they are smart and thus think they can slack off. What did Einstein say? Genius is 1% intelligence and 99% hard work.

So, mature in CC.

Besides, what is the purpose of education than application to help others? If you are smart, but don't apply yourself (i.e. are a slacker) then, frankly, you are a waste of a person to get an education. They are not only making an investment in you, but for the community and society in general.

Besides, you provide them no unique reason why you'd study in college anyway. Your experience empirically proves that you won't really challenge yourself or work hard. If the classes are harder, is there any proof at all you will work harder too? Without that kind of existing precedent, its hard NOT to pass you off as a perpetual slacker.

I believe your SAT will guarantee you into a UC School. For someone who is as obviously brilliant as yourself, I suggest you head to a community college your 1st two years. It should be a breeze for you. With straight A's, you should have no problem transfering into UCLA or UCB as a California resident.

UCSD may be possible, but I believe that is the highest of the reasonable schools, given your GPA.

Another thought I just had...if you get all A's in a challenging schedule sr yr, you may be able to appeal to say UCLA & UCB which might get you in given your insanely high test scores.

what are you intending to pursue in future studies, do you have anything aimed toward that? Also I usually wouldn't reccomend a community college at all, but with the high admissions rates from ucla and ucberkely for california community college residents, I would say in terms of the relative competition within the applicant pool your chances are greater as a transfer when compared to a froshmen applicant

To answer everyone one by one..(thanks alot for your help btw ^_^)

Noel: I might have ADD? I don't know...but I am arrogant and thinks i don't need to do any HW because...i mean whats the point of doing hw to acquire knowledge i can pick up by osmosis. i mean hw is there for those who needs it but i don't. well of coruse thats my view before but now i know that even tho i dont need it, i have to take it for colleges and to show dedication

tear:like i have expalined, sir, i was not mature when i entered high school and to decide my fate like that is..hmm..cruel. at that time i would have agreed. well i dono really know if i would have worked harder if i had like 5 ap but i wasn't given that chance. after arriving in la, i was immediately sent to an independent study school for the rest of my freshman year. startong from that point on, i loathed my school.

stam:thanks but how do i send my senior grades to colleges?

zetsui:well i might be aiming for the big 5 econ graduate school thus i need attend a similar ug school.

LOL, Einstein is such a hypocrite...didn't he just get all his formulas while riding on a cloud in his dreams

And he failed math in school -_-

You will never get into NU, Chicago or NYU.

isn't cal harder than other 3? except maybe chicago' econ

can you stop saying he'll never get in?

just do your best and apply. see what happens. write good essays. don't be smug or give excuses for bad grades unless it's valid. if you actually do have ADD, then it's a good thing to say. but i can't see you having ADD when you got 2300 on the SAT, which is like 5 hours of concentrating

oh..haha darn you are right, i can't count on ADD i guess. I never really got distracted on tests X_X...or when i am playing 10hours in a row on the comp..lawl
