Hi everyone,
I am a HS senior who has flown out of to Chicago by myself to face these impending auditions. So far, I've only done one at U of Utah, but I've got thebig leagues line up iin the next week (DePaul, BU, CMU, uMich) and I just want to hear people's reactions to these auditions. I've been following some people on this site for quite some time (I had a flakey coach and theater director and parental support) but otherwise I'm on my own so everything on here is giving me some perspective.

Hope you get some good advice from previous students. Just wanted to say Break a Leg, and if you start getting overwhelmed, turn to the person next to you (be it kid or someone’s parent) and start up a conversation!

I am impressed that you are doing this on your own - good for you!

PbZ, I hope you have paid close attention to the many stories about people trying to second-guess the audition results based on how they felt about how the faculty responded to them, and turned out to be 100% wrong. Do not make yourself crazy overthinking an audition that is over. You may think they loved you and they didn’t. You may think they weren’t even listening to you, and they were.

And don’t forget to eat nutritious food.

There.

Sage advice. It occurs to me that these auditions are run by actor themselves, and they may not let on how exactly they feel about these students for exactly that reason. Do these schools even look at GPA/Standardized Tests scores? I’ve gotten different answer on that subject.

PbZ-- You sound very independent and capable. I wish you had a pal with you but you also sound sensible and calm, and really one of the main jobs of a parent or friend is to help keep the nerves at bay. I think you’ll find friendliness and generosity among your auditors-- the more you can be your natural self, the better. Yes, get plenty of protein, water, and once you’re done with the audition, put it behind you.

The schools you’re talking about don’t set much store by SAT’s-- except Mich and if you’re auditioning it means you’ve passed the academic cut. If you’re a great student that’s irritating, if not, it’s relieving! I will be sending good vibes your way this week!!

Yes, my son made the same point. These people are trained actors, and they know how to hide their feelings!

It’s my impression that the artistic staff don’t bother about GPAs and SATs, but at some schools their chosen students also have to be cleared by an academic admission committee. Sometimes they have to be approved before they can even audition, more often it’s afterwards.

At the USC audition, my son had an interview thing with an admissions person who asked him, “What can you bring to USC, academically?” The audition part was completely separate.

BU will also look at your SATs/GPA.

I was the exact same boat last weekend with NYC Unified Auditions, so I commend and empathize with your bravery.

I thought other people might be in my situation. These plane tickets were expensive!
I hope everyone out there has a fun time auditioning for all of these different places this week, at least! These auditions don’t really go away if you go into the field, so the lessons you learn here will be valuable!

“These auditions don’t really go away if you go into the field, so the lessons you learn here will be valuable!”

Very true. That attitude will serve you well.Good luck!

My D really enjoyed her BU and DePaul auditions - especially BU. They really took time to talk to the kids and parents before the auditions began. Really friendly. And during the audition, they worked with D and her monologues. She would have gone to BU (3 years ago) if the $ had been better. Sigh, maybe grad school.

Good luck to every one at Chicago Unifieds!

My son really did enjoy the NYC Unifieds, I wish everyone who is auditioning broken legs…take deep breathes and don’t forget to eat!!! And truly, try not to over analyze, when the audition is over, it is over…just do your best!!!

Good luck PbZepp! I’m in a similar situation, although I’m flying from another country.

In addition to remembering to eat properly, also remember to get enough sleep!
