Chicago v. Hopkins

Planning on majoring in International Relations/maybe doing Premed. I LOVE Chicago's housing system and the city, and JHU's proximity to D.C. Advice?

JHU has a much better Pre-Med and Medical School, if you are planning to go that route. However, Chicago would be better suited for International Relations because its core provides you with the tools to analyze and truly think. It’s much more holistic. Two Great options, but if you are undecided between the two, then JHU seems like a better option because it has one of the best med schools in the entire world.

coltsfan715: I don’t understand your logic. If ballerdv is undecided, wouldn’t it make UChicago a better choice because of its well-rounded education?

well he is undecided between two majors: international relations and premed. From his post, I assumed that those wants to do something betwee those two only.

That would still make UChicago a better choice because it excels both in the social sciences and the natural sciences.

NB - premed is not a major.

chicago is your best option in regards to having an incredible college experience.
this school is seriously one of the best institutions out there. do it. it’s only been rising in the past few years, and while medical studies on its own shines at jhu, almost everything shines here. this place is incredible when it comes to the exchange of ideas, and professor student interaction.

But if ballerdv is really really sure and love to study med in gradschool…JHU is hard to give up.

except that you don’t want to go to JHU undergrad and then JHU med school. You’d want to have a little variety.

Another thing that made me not even apply to JHU: Baltimore. Baltimore sucks. Especially right around the campus. Chicago is amazing. That made the decision for me. That and how UChicago is internationally known to be amazing (and has the world rankings to prove it), whereas JHU is a bit more US-focused.

If you’re thinking international relations, why not go for an internationally known name?

I say Chicago because it’s IR program is top ranked, and it has a strong Pre-Med program so in the event you want to do Medicine, just do good on the MCAT and transfer to schools like JHU for medicine/etc IMO.
