Uchicago takes academics as seriously as many schools take sports so this isn’t surprising. People there are serious about quiz bowl model UN Mock trial etc.

Proud Mom here, my kid is a member of the team, and is in one of the photos. It is a great team, top ranked.

Yeah I know a guy who supposedly got “recruited” by UChicago’s MUN team, like athletic recruits at other colleges. I don’t know how much truth there is to this statement, but UChicago’s MUN team has been top-ranked for decades now. It’s currently #3.

Nihilus, that it is not true.

It depends what Nihilus means by “recruited.” I highly doubt that the Model UN team has any sway with the admissions office but, after a student is admitted, I have no doubt UChicago’s Model UN team reached out to the admit and recruited him hard to come to UChicago.

Academic games are serious business at UChicago.

Hm, I’m not part of the team myself but I knew quite a few of the members and I’ve never heard of somebody being “recruited” in the same manner as athletes are in other schools. In fact, the team prides itself in being able to take in inexperienced debaters and shaping them into quality MUn-ers through rigorous training. Of course there’s also kids that devoted their lives to MUN in high school, but my sense is that they head straight to the team offices during Orientation Week rather than being recruited beforehand. There’s also the fact that everybody, even those high school veterans, need to go through a try out process.

Again, I’m not actually part of the team, so maybe there is some sort of process like the one Cue7 described through which admitted students are contacted by the team that I’m not aware of. Even that seems a little hard to be believe, though, given that the team is not exactly the MUN darling of the administration (that would be MUNUC, the RSO in charge of the high school conference) and I’m not sure how much access they would be granted to the admitted students files. What I could see happening is the team finding out about the student’s presence on campus once classes start and then trying to convince them to join.

PMCM18:

I can’t speak to the UChicago Model UN team specifically, but, in knowing admissions more broadly, once students are admitted, admissions officers typically rely on current students to sell the school/recruit students. This may mean having talented admitted musical performers be contacted by current students in the choir, orchestra, etc. This may mean having current students at the black students association reach out to relevant admitted students.

I imagine such a practice could occur with Model UN. Students tend to be able to sell the school better than admissions officers, after admit day passes.
