Chico State or dream school?

Should I go to my community college and then go to Cal Poly SLO, or go to Chico State? Cal poly has always been my dream school but I also want to get away and get the college experience. Any advice?

Have you already been admitted to Chico? Cal Poly admission is very competitive and there is no guarantee that you will be admitted after you finish a CC. Just take a look at the transfer thread to see examples of people w/ really high stats who were denied admission. You could possibly go to a CC and then still not be able to attend CP. if you do decide to go that route, just be aware of that possibility and be sure to apply to some back-up schools.

Yes, I’ve already been admitted to chico state. I know I still might not be able to transfer to cp after cc. Just not sure if it’s a risk worth taking

Go to Chico. Enjoy a residential experience.

As noted above, transferring into SLO is no sure bet. Chico is good school and one of the most ‘residential’ CSUs. If you want that experience, they have it in spades. My son is a freshman living on campus and LOVES it. He too was rejected by SLO.

Head up to Choose Chico day next week and see what you think. Be ready to buy a Wildcats t-shirt though because, I think you’ll be impressed.

Good luck.

Chico is a great school. Go there and have fun.

If you want the “college experience”, remember that it is usually freshmen and sophomores who live in the dorms. By the time people reach their junior year, they are often wanting to live off campus. So it is really the first two years that give the “college experience.”

Go to Chico and don’t look back. There’s a lot to be said for the continuity of spending 4 years in the same place. You get to know profs, how the school works, have some favorite hangouts, etc. Also people are far more open to making new friends frosh year when they are new and know few people than they are as juniors that already have a group of friends they’ve known 2 years already. Chico is a good school and a great environment.

Wow - not a dissenter among us. Great points above about the fresh/soph years being such a big part of the 'college experience. Though you’ll get the same ‘education’ commuting to your local CC, you won’t learn/grow nearly as much.

Thank you for all your replies! Super helpful! I’m planning on going up to chico next week and visiting!

Don’t go to Chico because its Chico

Chico is a wonderful college town. The campus us beautiful - a mix of brick/ivy and modern. It is a ‘sleeper’ university weighted down by an undeserved reputation as a party environment… Grab the opportunity, enjoy evey minute, consider blessed!

If you were close to the cut for SLO, check out their Honors program… it’s a different GE track with priority registration and optional housing. My son likes it alot.

I checked the website and I actually do qualify for the honors program. Sounds like a great opportunity!

yes the Honors program is great ad would totally change your experience for the better. Chico is good already, but with the honors program you will wonder, six months from now, why you even hesitated. Congratulations!
